Follow these seven steps to go from burnt out and bored in your job to passionate and fulfilled in your career.
Have you ever asked someone you’ve just met, “What do you do?” only to have her go on and on about how much she loves her job? Her passion is so blindingly obvious. You can see it in her body language and hear it in her voice. In the midst of her seemingly never-ending, enthusiastic monologue, your thoughts go from “There’s no way she can enjoy working this much” to “I want what SHE’S having!”
I used to be skeptical of people who told me they love what they do, that their job does not feel like work to them. I wondered, “How on earth have they managed to find a position and career they are so passionate about. What’s their secret? How can I get what THEY have?” All of that started to change for me a year ago when I began my own journey in search of career fulfillment and found the path to one’s true passion. Below are the steps you, too, can take to find the job that will fill you with joy.
1. Figure out exactly why you’re not satisfied with your job right now. What aspects of your current position do you like the most? The least? How do you feel when your alarm clock goes off in the morning—excited and energized to go to work, or lethargic and dreading the day?
2. What is most important to you in your career and life? Come up with your top five values. Then compare them to the values of your current position and your organization to see if they are in alignment.
3. Taking into consideration your top five values and what you like most and least about your current position, develop a clear vision of your ideal job. Create your personal mission statement. What difference do you want to make in the world through the work that you do?
4. Examine your beliefs about your ideal job. Do you believe it exists? Do you believe you will be successful in pursuing your dream job? What fears do you have about changing things up? What are you afraid of losing? What are you afraid of gaining? Are your beliefs holding you back from attaining your true path?
5. Explore the messages from society, family, and friends about what it means to be successful. Then write your own definition of success, taking into consideration your top five values. Understand that fulfillment comes from following your own dreams, living life according to your own rules, not someone else’s.
6. Create a step-by-step plan to take you from where you are now to where you want to go. Implement that plan with the help of a strong support network. Ask trusted friends and/or family members to hold you accountable for taking action.
7. Periodically take time to evaluate the path you are on. And be sure to celebrate small successes along the way.
Remember, career fulfillment is not a destination; it is a continuous process and journey that requires taking the time to listen to yourself and changing direction as needed.
