How can a Personal Trainer Benefit from a Life Coach?

Results from personal training involve not only addressing the physical "how", but also the mental "how"!
At an industry birthday party this past weekend in Atlanta, I ran into a personal trainer. When I told him that I was a Life and Relationship Coach (in a more elaborate explanation, of course), he immediately became excited about the possibilities of our partnership. So naturally, I immediately asked myself “how can a personal trainer and their clients benefit from a life coach?” Of course I know there are many benefits, but what exactly are they?”
It almost works hand in hand. Life Coaches can benefit from the relationship just as much as a personal trainer.
When a client approaches a personal trainer, they desire to become thinner, eat healthier, get the perfect stomach, overcome body complexes and self-esteem frustrations, etc. They essentially want a makeover! However, while a personal trainer addresses they physical “how”, the mental “how” is left at home on the couch with Sour Cream & Onion Lay’s Potato Chips. Because the reality of it is, you can make the commitment to change your lifestyle, but you aren’t fully committed until your mind and body are in it together.
A Life Coach can benefit clients of a Personal Trainer who are struggling with keeping their commitments, finding their self-confidence, don’t see the value in eating healthy, are approaching working out with a negative attitude, and who continue to struggle with body complex issues and aren’t appreciating the work they’ve accomplished.
A Personal Trainer and a client of a Personal Trainer can benefit from a Life Coach because the client will be mentally stable and ready to make improvements, they will see the benefit of continuing their relationship with their trainer, will be encouraged to make healthier decisions that can result in more drastic changes, and they will be more of a joy to work with.
Tom Terwilliger of Terwilliger Fitness sums it up nicely,
“The relationship that develops between client and personal trainer is vastly enriched when the trainer assumes the role of mentor and life coach. Understanding the important role that coaching plays in the client success model, we felt it was imperative to add life coaching to our list of services… Life coaching has proven to be one of the most influential client retention tools we’ve ever initiated. What we discovered after the 2-month introduction period was that our average monthly client falloff and dropout rate had decreased by almost 20%. In addition, we found a measurable increase in the number of training sessions the coached clients were doing after coaching versus before life coaching. On average, those clients were completing one additional session per week. For clients who want extra life coaching (weekly or more), we offer a fee-based program. “
What an awesome success story that shares the benefits of incorporating life coaching with your personal training services!
