You’ll be surprised how much better you’ll feel when you’re finally in control of you reactions & channel that energy into positive conduits.
When you’ve sat down and figured out what your unhealthier coping mechanisms are when it comes to dealing with stress, now the fun part begins – changing the way you react and deal with tough situations. It’s no easy task to unlearn habits that you may have been cultivating for years and years, but with a little persistence and a lot of hard work, it can be done. You’ll be surprised how much better you’ll feel when you’re finally in control of you reactions and are able to channel that energy into positive conduits.
The more important thing to remember when you are dealing with stress is that you have more control over the situation than you probably originally thought possible. There are certain situations in life that are hard to avoid altogether, but there are certain things you can do to mitigate the stress levels involved in any situation. Namely, the two things to remember are that you can either choose to change the situation at hand, or change your reaction to that situation.
There are many stressful situations that we place ourselves in constantly without realizing that it’s entirely possible to remove ourselves from these situations and rid ourselves of the stress at the same time. If you have a hard time listening to the problems of your friends without feeling stressed out, consider putting a moratorium on how much you’re willing to play therapist to others. If going to large gatherings makes you unhappy, do the best you can to avoid those situations. Once you figure out what the main sources of your stress are, you might be surprised to realize how much power you have in removing yourself from some of those circumstances.
Of course, there are also some situations that you will be unable to remove yourself from. Bills are going to keep on rolling in, no matter where you move or how many times you try and “remove yourself” from the situation of paying them. (In fact, we strongly recommend against removing yourself from the obligation of paying taxes. The resulting situation will do nothing for your stress levels.) When it comes to dealing with situations that cause you stress yet are entirely unavoidable, you can always start managing ways to deal with the stress before it starts. In the case of tax season – you know that it’s coming every year like clockwork. If you are in a position where you have to pay taxes, it’s wise to start taking precautions to ensure that you have enough money to cover your debts when tax season comes around. In this way, you won’t have to worry about not having enough money, thus removing the stress from the situation.
One of the biggest secrets that nobody ever tells you about dealing with stress is that a lot of it is about managing your life in a way that prepares you for the trappings of everyday life. One of the biggest causes of stress is being unprepared – unprepared to meet others, unprepared to hit deadlines, unprepared to pay bills. Taking control of your life and preparing yourself as well as possible is the best way to manage your stress and give you a sunnier outlook all around.
