How to Navigate Through a Life Transition

The steps to reach your goals...
“I’m ready for a career change…”
“My relationship is coming to an end…”
“Parenting is harder than I thought…”
“Retirement is boring…”
“Losing my loved one is overwhelming…”
Life is full of challenging events. Some are easy to navigate and others need more planning. If you can envision a better life, you can achieve it: picture the prize. Most situations have two options, remaining the same or working toward a change. If you’re ready for a change, the steps are simple:
1. Visioning
Picturing your ideal life involves all your senses. How will you feel in this situation? Who is around you? What positive changes will occur? When will this happen? If you truly believe that you can make a change, you need to lead your life as if it will happen. Getting rid of self doubt and procrastination are a huge part. All future decisions will be made with this ideal in mind.
Someone struggling to parent a teenager may envision a life with less chaos; one where both the parent and child are able to communicate and not argue. They may envision quiet meals at the dinner table, rules being followed and overall tranquility. By dedicating themselves to change, the parent will be able to feel the effects physically and mentally for a more peaceful existence.
2. Goal Setting
With your ideal life in mind, ask yourself, “How can I get there?”.
Brainstorm some of the key components to make this happen. How long will each step take? Individuals will typically set goals with three, six and twelve month milestones, and may expand those goals for a three to five year plan.
An individual who has envisioned a career change may start to create goals for a job search. At the end of three months, a job compatibility assessment will be completed, a resume and cover letter will be created, and interviewing techniques will be mastered. By six months, detailed analysis and research for suitable companies will be identified and targeted. Networking opportunities will be established along with employment possibilities. When a year approaches, each step will lead to the eventual transition to a new career.
3. Developing Strategies
Breaking down your goals into manageable steps is the key to advancement. Everyone can succeed if done in moderation because change doesn’t need to happen overnight since even small steps still lead to progress. As long as you are moving forward, change will occur. Enjoy the process by spending time creating useful and worthwhile steps; when the strategies are achievable they lead to success.
A man who has just recovered from a divorce may develop strategies to achieve his goal of dating again. Some strategies may include joining a sports league, volunteering or attempting on-line dating. Each strategy would be carefully considered and then evaluated for positive results.
