COURAGE IN TRANSITIONS

It takes courage to make career changes or decisions: applying for a job, trying a new position, taking a chance, going after your dream job.
I suppose my life would be alot different today if I didn’t have some courage when growing up…I would have:
•just stayed in my crib instead of going on an adventure…..up and over the railing before Mom or Dad caught me just in time.
•been beaten up by that school bully……if I didn’t have the courage to stand up to him.
•been a real loner….. if I didn’t have the courage to make friends with children in school or in the neighborhood.
•never known the joy of reading music and playing the accordion….if I didn’t have the courage to learn to read music and practice alot.
•never been a teacher…if I didn’t follow my heart and have the courage to change my college major from physics to education.
•never found my wife (to be)….if I didn’t have the courage to ask her to lunch for the very first time despite a fear of possible rejection.
Similarly, it takes courage to make career changes or decisions:
•applying for a job….despite knowing you may not be selected
•saying no to a position…because you know in your heart it is not the right fit for you
•trying a new position….despite the uneasiness of learning new skills
•taking a chance to introduce yourself to a potential employer….despite a fear of rejection
•going after your dream job….although it will require discipline, focus and risk of failure
Finally, Susan Boyle, whose courage inspired me to write this article, would never have gotten on stage in fulfillment of a tribute to her mother, from whom she states her courage came.
