If you are out of balance, then take the steps to hang out with people who will help you balance.
Everybody wants happiness. So why is it so hard to keep it?
That’s because what will make you happy today is less likely to make you happy tomorrow. We have this habit of expecting that we can find “everlasting happiness” and it might well be because of all those stories we heard as children that ended with “and they lived happily ever after.”
Nobody can live happily all the time because life is too dynamic. We contribute to that life’s dynamic nature because of our quest to grow and enjoy new adventures.
No matter how happy you are with your fame, wealth status, career, social life, you will get bored with all of them if you are not learning and growing.
So the secret to happiness may be more in embracing the sadness. Sadness tells us we have work to do. If we sit in our sadness and contemplate what we want to change, we can identify why we are bored and what is blocking our next adventure. Sadness motivates us to reflect within us and find aspects of ourselves that are due for change.
If one were to define happiness in a more everlasting way, one would have to point to self belief and inner strength. If that makes you happy, it means you can be happy when everyone is adamant you should be sad.
Perspective allows you to know that sadness is purposeful and happiness inevitable. Does this not remove the worry and pressure, thereby allowing you to learn and slide into happiness faster? It does for me!
When you feel your self worth and know you matter, then happiness cannot stay away from you very long. If you have an obstacle in your life, you may momentarily lose your happiness, because serious focus and a little work is needed. However, the send of achievement makes the happiness sweeter – as we feel it more intensely once we have earned it.
What if happiness never leaves you? What if we deviate from our natural state of happiness? This would mean that whenever we are sad, this is a hint that we are believing something that is untrue about ourselves and our options.
I believe that happiness has a role to play, as much as any other emotion. If you lose a loved one, then grief and sorrow for example are natural states of being that seems appropriate. We withdraw into ourselves and hold our focus on that loved one as a way of honouring who they are and what they meant to us. The contrast of happy and sad seems like how we emotional navigate and make personal sense of our experiences.
The dilemma is feeling sad too often. If we have been in an environment that is depressing, then we can fall in the trap of seeing the world as depressing. Its important to keep a healthy balance of optimisim and pessimism otherwise, you will say no to rewarding opportunities and yes to destructive ones. A healthy level of perception is maintained by a balanced mood.
If you are out of balance, then take the steps to hang out with people who will help you balance. Do not be with irresponsibly people who think whatever they do will bring no consequence. Equally, do not hang out with people who have lost hope and see the downside in everything.
