Learning how to get back on track after a setback. Learning to focus on what you can do vs what you can't do.
Life is a rollercoaster. Always going up, and down. There are times in life when everyday seems like a challenge, and other days when you feel like you’re on cloud nine. Setbacks, temptations, and injuries are a normal part of life. It is easy to feel depressed and frustrated when your plans don’t go your way, but in order to stay healthy and strong use this time to focus on what you can do instead of what you can’t do.
Think Healthy: For most of us life is so busy, we barely have a chance to sit and catch up on reading, meditation, or re-connect with family/friends. Part of being a healthy person is having a healthy mind and soul. When you go, go, go, all the time you can become stressed and exhausted, and get lost in your short and long term goals. Use this time to work on projects that you are normally too busy to do, make a lunch date with an old friend, take up yoga, or just rest and relax.
Eat Right t: It is easy to fall off the wagon when you are stressed and depressed, but even though you cannot do all the exercises that you would like, you can still make a difference in your diet by eating right. Use this time to research some new, fresh, healthy recipes. If you are craving sweets and carbs (which we normally do when we are stressed/depressed) reach for some fresh fruit, sweet potatoes, black beans, or low-fat yogurt. Try not to think All or Nothing. Life is a balance; even though you can’t do one thing, don’t let it affect the things that you can do.
Strength Train: Focus on building strength in your arms, core, glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps muscles. Keeping your muscles active and strong will help you to heal faster. Just because your limited in some forms of exercise, doesn’t’ mean you can’t do bicep curls, abdominal crunches, pushups, or planks.
I have had setbacks and injuries myself. It is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when you feeling so limited, but I promise you, this time will pass. Negative energy only hurts you by diminishing your goals, and life plan, while adding stress and tension within yourself and others. Being upset with something that is out of your control will only make your situation worse. Work everyday on re-building your knee with baby steps, and re-directing your energy into a healthy, positive situation. This will help you to get back on track, and stay true to your health/fitness goals.
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
