Setting and accomplishing goals isn’t always easy, but it is 100% possible! To turn your goals into full blown reality, it’s important to have a few strategies up your sleeve. Here are some of the strategies I use to accomplish my goals. Which ones will you take and use in your life?
Twelve Strategies to Accomplish Any Goal:
1. Keep a stone in your purse. Let the stone represent your goal and every time you reach into your purse to grab something, you’ll be reminded of your goal and its importance in your life.
2. Tell everyone you know about your goal. This will help bring it to life and make you feel responsible for following through.
3. Set the alarm on your phone to remind you of your goal at least once a day. Every time you hear the alarm, check in with yourself. What progress have you made towards your goal so far?
4. Music. Choose a theme song that represents the goal you want to accomplish. Listen to the song every morning when you get ready for the day or in the car while you drive to work. You could even set it as the ringer on your phone.
5. Write affirmations for your goal. Use the present tense (like you have already accomplished your goal) and post the affirmations on sticky notes around your home and car. For Example:
“I love feeling so energetic now that I practice yoga every day.”
“Now that I make $____________/year, I love being able to rejuvenate my mind, body and spirit on an annual tropical vacation.”
“I make the time for what matters most to me, which gives me a great sense of fulfillment and purpose.”
6. Connect with the wisdom of your Future Self. Your Future Self is the highest version of yourself. She has already accomplished every goal you are working towards now, so why not tap into her wisdom and ask her how she did it? Whenever you feel doubt or notice self-sabotaging thoughts creeping in, connect with your Future Self.
7. Think of it as practice. Anyone who has ever become great at anything practiced to get there. It didn’t happen overnight for them, and it won’t happen overnight for you either. So just think of your efforts to accomplish your goal as practice. If you fall off track, stop, take a deep breath, ask yourself what you can learn from the experience, and then get back on board.
8. Create a vision board. Find images and words that represent your goal and post them on a big poster board. Hang your vision board in a place where you’ll see it often. You could even take a picture of your vision board and upload it as the wallpaper on your desktop or phone. These inspiring images will constantly motivate you to accomplish your goal.
9. Choose an accessory that reminds you of your goal. Wear it daily. This could be a ring, bracelet, necklace, scarf, etc.
10. Get support from people who believe in you! Examples are: friends, family, accountability buddies, life coaches, therapists, personal trainers, and mentors. You can also find support through communities like: clubs, organizations, and, well, support groups. Reach out!
11. Make it your password. Change the password to all your online accounts to represent your goal. Every time you type it, you will be reminded of your goal.
12. Create SMART Goals for your New Year’s Resolution.
S = Specific: Incorrect – “Get in shape,” Correct – “Join a health club by January 1st and workout 3 times per week.”
M = Measurable: How will you measure your progress? You could create a spreadsheet; designate a piece of clothing to measure your weight loss against, etc.
A = Accountable: Who will you be accountable to? (A life coach, therapist, workout buddy, support group, friend…)
R = Resonant: Does this goal align with your values and the big picture vision you have for your life? Does it make your stomach flip-flop with excitement? These are signs that your goal is resonant.
T = Time Bound: When is the deadline for accomplishing your goal?
