Breakfast: To Eat or Not to Eat?

We all have different metabolism; is it possible that we all may not NEED breakfast?
Are you the type of person that wakes up in the morning and cannot even THINK about eating? Are you full and content and NOTHING sounds good??
OR
Are you the type of person that wakes up STARVING and cannot get to 9:30am if you haven’t eaten SOMETHING? Maybe you like to eat a sit down breakfast every morning?
Most likely you are one of the two or somewhere in the middle. The point is, we do not all have the same metabolism. We should not feel pressured to conform to what society says breakfast is.
Let’s be honest. To society, breakfast is: Egg McMuffins, 8 cups of coffee, toast and butter, frosted flakes, doughnuts, bagels, coffee cakes…. Where is the nutritional value? Are we REALLY getting the breakfast of champions?
Your hunger (or lack thereof) in the morning could be due to what you ate the night before, the amount of sleep you got, adrenal fatigue, etc. It seems we are all bombarded with different messages about breakfast. Like, you HAVE to eat a hearty breakfast to start your day off right. You must consume x amount of protein and x amount of carbs for it to be a ‘balanced’ breakfast. Or, if you skip breakfast, you’ll lose weight. I mean, COME ON! How can anyone make a choice?!
I’ll tell you how! Turn off all the noise. Listen to YOUR BODY. Be flexible. You don’t HAVE to eat the same thing everyday… you have so many choices. If you aren’t feeling so hungry, try a light smoothie or a piece of fruit. If you’re feeling like you need something, cook up some oatmeal or scramble an egg with spinach. Think ahead. You’re not hungry now, but you have a slammed morning? Smoothie now, bring banana and peanut butter for later. Throw some nuts in a container and grab a little thing of greek yogurt and you are well on your way to a healthy, happy day WITHOUT HUNGER.
Experiment. This week, breakfast is my thing. I stocked my fridge and pantry with everything I could ever crave in the morning and I will choose the minute my alarm goes off. I found that it’s easier for me to choose after I have had a little warm water with lemon. Someone once said that breakfast is LITERALLY breaking a fast. So, if you at least START with something light to wake up your tummy, you can make a better choice for what you need. Try this.
I suggest you stock up with fruit, nut butter, oats/quinoa (mix them in a bag dry – you will never want to eat just oats again), greek yogurt, eggs or egg whites, frozen veggies for omelets, frozen fruit for smoothies…. anything you like that creates a healthy breakfast. This way, no matter WHAT you crave or how hungry you are… you are guaranteed a healthy and wonderful breakfast.
Heck, someone once told me she eats salads for breakfast. She likes a good morning zip and salads deliver. Plus, she tried coffee cake… it made her want to go back to bed ;)
