Why We Need a Plan
by Penny August
“We make plans and God laughs”.
“If you don’t know where you’re going, you will certainly never get there”.
So, which is it? Do we make detailed plans for our lives, including short and long-term goals and the steps to get there, or do we just “go with the flow” and hope for the best, since our plans are often interrupted, side-tracked and/or completely demolished anyway?
I vote for a plan. We all know that life is unpredictable and that it is absolutely necessary to be flexible, adaptable and creative when changes are required. But if we have no plan at all, how can we possibly accomplish anything other than serendipitously?
It’s true – there are some people who seem to succeed effortlessly, but for most of us, success requires knowing exactly what we want and how we might accomplish it, along with determination, hard work, accountability, and a belief in ourselves. Without all that, no one will come knocking on our door with an offer of our dream job, unless maybe we’re unusually gorgeous and our dream job is to be a movie star. Even then, we’d need to find an agent, take some acting classes, learn the techniques of negotiation and of filming and the business of marketing ourselves. In other words, we’d need a plan. Otherwise, we’re just another pretty face going nowhere.
So even if you are lucky enough to tumble into your ideal life, I think it’s a great idea to have a plan. Then when we do get there, we’ll know exactly where we are, and we might even give others the road map.
