Some problems in life pop up over and over - like never having enough time or money. Stop treating the symptoms and get to the heart of the matter.
She had a bad case of fruit flies in her house … and it just kept getting worse. She Googled ‘how to get rid of fruit flies’. She asked all of her friends for solutions. She posted it on Facebook. She was implementing at least six solutions to get rid of them – vinegar, wine, hair spray, soap. Nothing was working.
A friend who is crazy about cleaning house came over and began washing down her counters and cabinets with bleach. She happened to find a bag of rotten potatoes in the back of a cupboard that no one even knew was there. That was the source of the fruit fly problem! Once it was removed, all was well again.
Do you have some fruit flies in your life – a symptom that you keep trying to get rid of and keeps popping up again no matter what you do? It could be that you keep seeming to attract guys who break your heart. It could be that no matter how much money you make, you always seem to be in the red. It could be that you have felt unappreciated in every single job you’ve had recently. These are all just symptoms – symptoms of patterns of thinking you have.
You can do what a lot of people do and try to get rid of the symptoms by getting out of the dating scene altogether, finding a better paying job, or moving to a new department so you have a more appreciative manager. That’s just treating the symptoms though.
If you really want to get rid of the problem once and for all, you’ve got to find that bag of potatoes. You’ve got to identify your thought patterns. Our thoughts become our beliefs which form our expectations and ultimately show up as the results we get – the symptoms. So if you want different results, you’ve got to think different thoughts. The tricky part is that your thoughts aren’t laying on the counter for all to see. They’re tucked away behind your skull, in the cupboard of your body. The very best way to find your ‘bag of rotten potatoes’ and get rid of your symptoms for once and all is to journal. Journaling allows you to actually see your thoughts. Once you know what they are, you can decide which ones are helpful, which ones are harmless, and which ones need to go out in the trash.
