5 Secrets for Building a Powerful Team
Nothing can be more gratifying to a leader than to see her team do everything they can to get things done quickly. The work schedule is accomplished at a very fast rate and the business targets and milestones are met and exceeded with professional regularity.
It is always great to see everything falling into their rightful place and lucky is the leader who is in that position. She is also blessed if she can witness what it takes to create a team that can really be termed as “awesome.”
Building a powerful team is not done overnight. It takes plenty of effort and time, and requires focus, commitment, positive attitude, persistence and tons of patience on the part of the leader.
However, if the practical leader will learn the 5 secrets to building a powerful team, the process can be accelerated and achieve the anticipated results.
As a team leader, you need to remember 5 words, which are: Respect, Deliver, Value, Measure and Correct.
To understand these words better here is a short explanation for each:
•Respect work. Remember that being a leader is all about the people you are leading. You have to realize that the role of each person in the organization or company is vital to your mission, whatever it is. Such realization must be put into action. As a leader, you should not underestimate any individual or assignment. Respecting work gives the person responsible for it better chances for success.
• Deliver on the promises that you gave to your team. There is absolutely nothing that can be more fatal to the culture of your team than a leader who acts contrary to what she promised. However, such action occurs repeatedly. On the other hand, if you are known as a leader whose words can be trusted, it generates a lot of respect from the team members, which in turn can really power up the team.
• Value work and its quality appropriately. Substandard effort should never be ignored while extraordinary effort should be given honor and commendation. Create a plan for compensation that is based on common sense and does not regress to the means in both execution and design. In addition, you should also create a feedback loop in real time, which will emphasize strengths and place people in the best possible position for success.
• Measure successes intelligently by fashioning metrics that are really meaningful and which could be acted upon, for each member of the team. Such metrics are vital components in satisfying your employees. If they can gauge their progress and the contribution they make to the company, they will develop a higher sense of personal satisfaction and responsibility than employees who cannot.
• Connect to the bigger aims of the business the valued, measured and respected work of team members. This can be referred to as the “cause.” As a leader, you should know why the job matters and how your actions create a difference. By fashioning a solid connection, each member of the team would feel as a valued part of the bigger whole and pursuing the cause together with the others. By having a connection to the cause, you will have the glue that will hold everything together.
