10 Basic Rules of Parenting

Ten helpful parenting tips to keep communication open while establishing appropriate boundaries with both your young children and your teenagers.
AS A PARENT, ONE SHOULD STRIVE TO…
1. Be dependable, sincere, fair, yet unyielding.
2. Focus on your child’s strengths not their weaknesses and encourage them to talk about their thoughts and aspirations. Giving you an opportunity to convey to them the confidence you have in them to be able to do several things well.
3. When they a mistake which is an expected element of learning make sure to avoid using strong words of disapproval and condemnation. Stay away from words like should have and do not fault, embarrass, or intimidate them.
4. Help your child feel protected and safe. Let them know you are there for them by giving of your time, your love, and your emotional support.
5. Help your child learn to problem solve. By allowing them to benefit or suffer from their choices. Offer to listen to them and discuss their feelings and their thought process and then acknowledge their efforts.
6. Children learn from what they see. Teach by example. Demonstrate to them the qualities you want them to develop such as integrity, compassion, reliability, truth and consideration of self and others.
7. Help your children learn to make proper decisions by giving them choices. It is okay to let them learn to bargain for privileges, but do not spoil them.
8. Do not compare one child to another. Value and evaluate each child on his or her own successes and failures and at their own pace.
9. Be a family united. Have each person contribute to the success of the household through chores, customs, and family outings and when need be trust them to cope through the hard times as well as a unit – a family. It gives children a sense of fitting in and belonging.
10. Don’t be afraid to admit when you are wrong, it becomes a learning experience for you as a parent and your child.
