Why Influential Engagement Works

Magic happens when we meet basic needs
When done really well, Influential Engagement inspires this kind of core thought:
She believes in me.
She trusts me.
She wants me to win.
She is there to support me if I need it.
The reason why Influential Engagement is so effective is because it fulfills basic human needs for safety, affiliation and credibility. Further, it creates a dynamic in which powerful action can be taken because you shift people’s core thoughts from their needs (read “neediness”) and into their motivations.
Influential Engagement is not just about surviving, but thriving. It sets the stage for you and your team to access your true potential together because you stop living in the world of conflict and ego, but begin to live in a world where you are both (all) are driven by your deepest motivations.
So when your colleague is challenging you and your ideas, consider your choices. You can push back and protect your idea, turf, or credibility. Or you can look for ways to take the negative energy OUT of the engagement by focusing on what the two of you CAN agree on. This way, you influence your colleague ( and yourself) to be driven by what motivates you instead of being driven by what you think your unmet needs are.
