ALIVE!

The Scene: Early morning February 5th, 3:54AM Women’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC.
My wife had just gone through over 27 hours of labor and she was deep in the last hour… Little Koan was in distress with each push and contraction as his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. They inserted an internal heart monitor and pinned it to his head. His heart rate went up and down precariously between contractions. Within moments the full delivery emergency team was on hand to deliver him with using suction! After a couple of pushes he was half out, and the head obstetrician skillfully cut the cord, and within another minute he was out and handed over to a handful of staff, massaging him under heat lamps. He was still for over two whole minutes.
Two minutes of stillness. I was by Kanako’s side wide aware of the time I had not heard anything from Koan. Fierce Stillness; Strong with the desire for my son to breathe his first breath and cries of life.
At 4:05am Koan Chase Mahler entered the world, full of life and vigor. We were in heaven.
