New Year Transition Care Package
Posted on January 09, 2013 by Lisa Gentile, One of Thousands of Performance Coaches on Noomii.
Round-up of maverick-ready resources for transitioning into the new year with what matters most to you in mind.
Of course, things don’t necessarily end or change because the calendar changes. But we do find ourselves pondering change as the year turns. Any time may be a good time to reflect on and savor our experiences. Try these activities to find your story and its meaning.
Transition: Endings
1) Annual Shipping Manifest. Seth Godin recommends “shipping”, taking risks by getting projects out the door. At the end of the year he reviews his shipments. Celebrate your moxie by acknowledging everything you dared. (It works for me!) http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2010/12/yearinreview.html
2) Life Change Scale. Change happens when it happens. Sometimes we create it, other times we receive it. Both positive and negative changes can be stressful. Don’t overlook the work you put into shifting, surviving, and growing. Give yourself credit. The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale is now online. Check the boxes. Do the math. Give yourself a pat on the back (see #6). http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTCS_82.htm
Bonus: Did any of your changes lead you to a transition in thinking, feeling, doing, or being?
3) Moxie Wheel. So what would you like to have more of or less of next year? Where do you want to invest yourself? What is valuable and meaningful to you? What do you want to experiment with? Take the MoxieWheel for a spin. (It works for me!)
Transition: In Between
4) One-Page Career Cheat Sheet. Do you need a job or career change? Sarah Peck can show you how to doodle your way to a useful line of thinking. http://itstartswith.com/2011/11/the-one-page-career-cheat-sheet/
5) The Dip. Sometimes an endeavor gets tough not because it was a bad idea, but because we’re pushing through the obstacles that cause most others to give up. Seth has us covered here, too. His book describes when to stick and when to quit–and how selective quitting is even necessary for success. It applies to more than just the work world. http://sethgodin.typepad.com/the_dip/
5.5) Outsmarting the Dip. Check out Cynthia Lou’s tutorial (http://www.cynthialou.com/articles/the-dip-by-seth-godin-with-worksheet-outsmart-the-dip-by-cynthia-lou) and worksheet for outsmarting Seth’s dip (http://cynthialou.com/OutsmartTheDip_SYDBA.pdf)
6) Pack Compassion and Connection. Maybe this is not your moment for plans and action. It could be a time for rest and reverie, comfort and contentment. In either scenario compassion and connection make everything better.
Honor yourself and those around you to get through the hard days and make the good days even richer. Kristin Neff posts free guided self-compassion meditations: http://self-compassion.org/guided-self-compassion-meditations-mp3.html Brene Brown posts worksheets to accompany her books on imperfection and human connection: http://www.brenebrown.com/downloads-badges
Bonus: Ask your friends and family about their lives across the dinner table. What did they ship or risk this year? What did they quit or stick? Remember to listen rather than compete. Connect.
Transition: Beginnings
7) The Ship It Journal. Check out Seth’s simple but deep journal for getting that next project (personal, professional, or other) out the door. http://sethgodin.typepad.com/files/theshipitjournal.pdf
8) One-Day Business Plan. Do you prefer a slightly more classic approach to action planning? Try the One-Day Business Plan from Entrepreneur Magazine’s Resource Center. http://www.entrepreneur.com/formnet/form/1127 (It works for me!)
9) The $100 Startup. Thinking of starting something new? Match your interest with a market niche and rally your moxie. Read Chris Guillebeau’s book. http://100startup.com/
10) Moxie Boost and Team Strengths Builder. Strengths coaching provides the opportunity to down-play, up-play, and otherwise optimize your strengths so that you create just the right mix to match your current priorities. With the Moxie Boost coaching package for individuals and the Team Strengths Builder workshop for groups you understand what motivates you and how to apply your particular moxie for maximum impact. http://moxiemavericks.com/strengths.html
