What to Do When You Hate Your Job
Posted on November 08, 2012 by Gabrielle Conde, One of Thousands of Spirituality Coaches on Noomii.
Let’s face it, you need money to keep a roof over our heads and with the current economy, you want to keep any job we have right now. Yes, but…
Okay, show of hands.
Who has been there before?
Who hates their job now?
Yeah, most of us have been there. Let’s face it, we need money to keep a roof over our heads and with the current economy, we want to keep any job we have right now.
Right?
Yes, but…
…having a job just for money is not the most important thing in life. In reality, it can hurt you.
Let me tell you why.
The Death of 9 to 5 Jobs
Used to sing along to the Dolly Parton song, 9-to-5. It was one of my favorites when I was growing up. At the time, women were coming into their own in the workplace. The movie was a triumph for women in corporate America.
Why?
Because it told their story. The struggles they faced.
But, now, we have a very different struggle we are all experiencing.
Let me know if this sounds like you right now.
You divide your time to one part time job and then go to another job after that one. Or maybe you spend time at a 40 hour a week job, then come home and work on your business.
So you wind up tired, overspent, and ready to give up.
You work, work, work to provide for your family or just yourself. Because you want to sock away money in case a recession hits. You had goals. You wanted to go to Egypt to see the pyramids, you wanted to buy that cool SUV, you KNOW you HAVE to put money away in a bank account for your kids to go to college.
Instead, you work jobs that are paying the bills, but not getting you much farther than that. Maybe you have one or two inspirations to do something else, but you are stuck. You aren’t really sure what to do.
So you stay where you are.
The truth is, 9-to-5 jobs are essentially gone. Everything everywhere (except Chick-Fil-A) is open 24/7, 365 days a week…
…and for single moms who have to work 3 jobs to pay the bills, this means putting kids in daycare.
For one local mom, she almost lost one of her children while he was in the care of a daycare. The child would have been killed if it weren’t for a motorist who was passing by at the time the child was crossing a busy road.
Stopping to call the police for the child, they flagged down the EMS. This motorist saved the child’s life. Eventually he traced the child back to the daycare whose care the child was left in. His mom was notified, on the shift of one of her three jobs.
Another truth is, three jobs aren’t worth the possible death of a child… or yourself. If you fail to take yourself into consideration of your family, you do the reverse of what you intended to do:
Causing more harm than good.
The Myth of Fame and Fortune
Have you heard of Stephen King?
You know… the horror fiction writer.
In King’s book, On Writing, he explains his story about how he got into writing… and the events that led up to that.
His job was less than glorious and Tabitha worked at a fast food joint. You can read about it in his book if you’d like the full story.
This is what King says:
“Talent in cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.”Okay, so we know that King has received plenty of praise for his ingenious work. And he’s saying that talent is not worth anything.
So, that leaves us with what?
Hard work…
…but you already do enough of that, don’t you?
Well, let’s ask the band, The Beatles, about that. How about it?
The Beatles Take the Stage in Dingy Night Clubs
Well, they had to start somewhere.
Here’s what Paul McCartney says about The Beatles:
“There are only four people who knew what the Beatles were about anyway.”Well, from the images of screaming Beatles fans, you’d think that all of them knew what The Beatles were about. And with over 2 million album sales and over 2 billion iTunes singles, according to Statistic Brain, those people knew what The Beatles were about too.
But the truth?
They played about 300 shows in a tiny pub in Liverpool, according to Indiana.edu. They played and played and played, perfecting their performance and their music.
Hard work?
Nah. These guys were musicians through and through. They wrote their own songs, practiced, and crafted their own style and sound.
Why else would they win 11 Grammy Awards?
The Beatles didn’t quit what they were doing because they weren’t making enough money. They kept at it because they knew something inside them was pushing them on.
Here’s what John Lennon says about it:
“You make your own dream. That’s the Beatles’ story, isn’t it? That’s Yoko’s story. That’s what I’m saying now. Produce your own dream. If you want to save Peru, go save Peru. It’s quite possible to do anything, but not to put it on the leaders and the parking meters. Don’t expect Jimmy Carter or Ronald Reagan or John Lennon or Yoko Ono or Bob Dylan or Jesus Christ to come and do it for you. You have to do it yourself. That’s what the great masters and mistresses have been saying ever since time began. They can point the way, leave signposts and little instructions in various books that are now called holy and worshipped for the cover of the book and not for what it says, but the instructions are all there for all to see, have always been and always will be. There’s nothing new under the sun. All the roads lead to Rome. And people cannot provide it for you. I can’t wake you up. You can wake you up. I can’t cure you. You can cure you.” – John LennonAnd what we often dismiss as “daydreaming,” is the actual wake up call.
“One of my biggest thrills for me still is sitting down with a guitar or a piano and just out of nowhere trying to make a song happen.” – Paul McCartneyAnd that’s the secret to success.
If you want a job/career/business you love, you have to find out what you want to do.
How to find out what you want to do (and be successful at)
Working isn’t easy.
No job is always a lot of fun. There’s ups and downs to all of them.
And you have to get up everyday and go into the job whether you work from home or you drive to it.
And you have to stop thinking like a slave.
Yes, you heard me right. Instead, you need to find what is in you to do.
You have to decide right now that you are tired of taking what comes to you. You have to learn to put your foot down and make a stand.
You have to reach deep inside yourself, pray, and learn what it is that you conceive to do, that comes from who you are.
You have to dig deep:
- What do I want?
- What am I working towards in the long/medium/short term?
- What vision do I have for myself? My career? My family life? My finances?
- When do I want to achieve this?
- What will let me know that I have reached this?
Take some time to write down the answers to these questions. You have to learn what you want. You can’t get started towards your life purpose until you get clear on what it is you want. Because your life purpose is tied to your desire.
And once you’ve got a clear vision, you can start working towards it. Right now, in fact.
Your intuition is the secret to job/career/business success
Intuition is a connection with the wisdom and source of God.
Without a doubt, it’s your quickest route to knowing what you want to do to change your job, career, or business… and often gives you the insight on how to do it.
Using intuition will:
- Help you find what is possible on your life path
- Help you find your life purpose
- Help you find your strengths and your passion
- Help you move forward on your journey past obstacles
- Help you find ways and means to get there, often completely out of the blue
Help you connect with God through your senses to see the path that John Lennon talks about in his quote
Using the Life Path Visualization is an excellent way for you to find your life path. You can download it after you sign up and begin using it right now.
You can use it over and over again until you get clear on what is possible for you.
How to use your talents and gifts towards your life purpose
You know Lady Gaga, don’t you?
Do you think her act is all the way original?
No, not at all.
She got the idea from watching others before her.
She also listened when she was in her college Sociology class.
She learned what people wanted. To stand for something they could believe in, to give hope, to be different.
But, you are already different.
Your DNA strand is unique, all your own.
That’s how you were made.
And today, with all the choices available, there’s plenty of jobs.
There’s one business/job/career that would ignite you more than any of those j-o-b-s.
But you have to listen to yourself first.
And not discount the things that your intuition brings up to you.
What you feel in your senses. The insights that flash in your mind. Finding and following where your joy leads.
Practicing and perfecting that talent and gift takes hours and hours and hours of work. It takes time just like it took The Beatles. Just like it did Stephen King.
But you have to know where to start.
Have the vision.
That’s how you find your talents and gifts.
Would anyone tell Lady Gaga she’s a fake and not worth the millions she’s made?
Heck no! She worked hard playing for years until she saw how to make it work.
You can make it work too if you want it bad enough.
But first you will have to ask this question:
What do I want?
And this one:
What will having that get me?
And this is what you are working towards. The answers are your motivation.
The truth about finding your life purpose
Stepping into your life purpose is hard work. You can’t just go from job to race car driver in one day.
You have to practice and analyze how others make it work. You have to do the time of working in the field before getting to the end goal. You have to know whether you can make it at your job until you can get there.
And you have to work at building a business if that is your desire.
And that takes time.
So what’s the takeaway?
Never, ever give up on your dream.
Never, ever doubt the vision you see for yourself… for your family.
All you have to do is know where you want to go. Find your life path, the one that would make you the happiest and provide for yourself and family.
Then start working towards it.
Yes, it may take awhile, but stay on track by always putting the outcome in your mind, surround yourself with it, and it’ll happen sooner than you think…
…and it’s an investment in yourself and your future. Nothing is certain in these times.
For all that I’ve learned on the journey, having faith in God has proven to get me through even the toughest of times. And growing to appreciate the journey, all the people along the way, all the learning, the memories…
…this is your story, right?
So I leave you with this question:
What do you want?
