“If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, it must be a duck.” –Proverb
In part I, the Son Shiners realized that they appeared scared when standing before the church. I used three steps to help them overcome the appearance of fear and plant a seed of courage.
Step 1: Know that fear does not come from God. 2 Timothy 1:7 states, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” The Son Shiners and I discussed the meaning of the scripture. Once they realized that God did not want them to be afraid, we were ready to move on to step 2. Step 2: Let’s pretend.First, I asked the Son Shiners how they should appear before people. We practiced voice projection, stance, etc. Next, using hand motions, we learned 2 Timothy 1:7. We practiced repeatedly until they were like we got this Miss Jacqui. Great! They showed confidence.
Step 3: Perform it.I told the Son Shiners that we were going to show the youth ministry group what we learned. Using the hand motions, they recited the scripture without a hitch. They were amazing. Everyone cheered. The best part was that they did not look scared.
The result! They are better participants in the youth inspiration on Sunday mornings. So even if your child is not scared (wink wink), combatting the appearance of fear can plant seeds of courage.
