“If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, it must be a duck.” –Proverb
Every Sunday, the minister calls the children, ages ten and under, to the front of the church for youth inspiration. One Sunday, I noticed that the children had their heads down, arms folded, and refused to interact with the volunteer presenter. They looked scared. The following Wednesday, during bible study, I brought this to the attention of my Son Shiners, who composed the ten and under age group. One response was, “It’s not that I am scared. I just don’t want to do it.” Another response was, “It’s just too early in the morning.”I responded, “If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck….”
They shouted, “It’s a duck!”
“So, if your heads are down, your arms are folded, and you refuse to interact with the presenter, you looked like you are….”
“Scared,” they responded.
They got it! I explained that you must appear how you want people to see you. And if you are scared, there are ways to avoid looking scared until you are no longer scared. I used three steps to help them combat the appearance of fear and plant a seed of courage.
Step 1: Know that fear does not come from God.
Step 2: Let’s pretend.
Step 3: Perform it.
To hear the end of this story, stay tuned for part 2. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
