Three stages of career transition and reinvention
3 Stages of Career Transition and Reinvention
1. CLARITY–What am I going to do? Where am I going? What am I supposed to be doing? What is going to make me feel content, happy, motivated? What is my purpose? What lights me up?
Characteristics–People dealing with life change, life and career reinvention point. Feeling stress, anxiety, fear, uncertainty, doubts. Information overload about direction and purpose.
What To Do–Distance yourself from the chaos and information. Information fasts are great ways to gain clarity. Spend time in nature, away from the computer and office. Make clarity exploration time with a journal. Free your mind to have creative exploration time. My best thoughts come from this time. Talk through your desires with trusted friends and advisers. Make a career/purpose interest inventory. The Strong Interest Inventory and MBTI are fabulous tools for this.
2. PLANNING–The cursed how’s. How am I going to do it? What do I need to get it done? What resources do I need? What actions do I need to take? How am I going to find time? Where do I start?
Characteristics–Knowing what you want to do, but feeling stress, overwhelmed, disorganized, scattered, lacking focus and direction, may be unsure of clear steps/action to take to reach goals. Fear, uncertainty, doubts about getting it done and reaching your goals.
What To Do–Create a Yearly Plan with your goals and desired outcomes. Create action steps that will help you reach those goals. Post it somewhere that you can see it daily. Create action steps each week that will help you get to each goal.
3. ACTION–Juggling. Making it all happen. Juggling and balancing priorities and time. Accessing the people, things and resources to make it happen. Step by step actions that will get you to your goals identified in the clarity and planning stage.
Characteristics–Trying to get it all done. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Feeling there is not enough time in the day to get everything done. Distracted and pulled in multiple directions. Lacking focus and concentration. Paralyzed and tired when trying to accomplish tasks or thinking about getting things done. Busy, not getting enough sleep, eating poorly, not exercising or socializing. Not taking good care of self.
What To Do–Create an action plan and prioritize the actions that are most critical and give no energy to things that do not serve you or your goals well. (BTW: Fun and self-care should always be a goal). Pre-plan and prep for your week each week. Identify the resources needed to accomplish your goals for the week and have them all together and organized ready to go when your week starts. The less time you have to spend on organizing details during the week, the more time you can focus on getting the important things done. This helps to eliminate obstacles to your success.
Here’s to your success! You can do it!
