What Good Happened Today? Creating a Positive Outlook, Changing the Course of a Day

“What good happened today?” is a question I often ask my Son Shiners class at the beginning of bible study. Many times, the kids, although they are in pre-K and elementary school, come to church burden down. As adults, we think because they are kids their lives aren’t bad. What do they have to complain about? For their age and maturity level, it could be quite a bit.
But regardless of what they face, we can refocus their attention on the positive and reshape the remainder of their day. So, I will ask “What good happened today?” and carefully listen to what they say. In asking this simple question, I have prepared their minds for the study of God’s Word.
Now warning: You will have those kids who say nothing good happened today. I had a terrible day at school. My response is something good did happen today. Did you sleep inside a house instead of on the street? Did you have a meal? Do you have clothes to keep you warm? Did your mommy hug you today? The answers are normally yes. Once they have acknowledged that something good happened, the kids cannot disagree.
I encourage you to try this question at least every so often. When you do so, kids will start telling you what good happened without prompting. It will change the course of their day and eventually their lives. See Philippians 4:8. For more about Christian Children’s Empowerment, visit jacquiwilson.net.
