The pursuit of happiness could be costing you money and your relationships.
How much is happiness costing you?
Everything in our society is pointing you towards happiness. All you have to do to be happy is drink the right drink, eat at the right restaurants, wear the right clothes, be the right size, have the right technology, live in the right neighborhood, drive the right car, have the right education, get the right job, and marry the right person. If you can manage to do all of the above just “right,” happiness is awaiting you. In fact, it is guaranteed.
You are inundated, bombarded with messages of what happiness is and how to get it. Look around the messages are everywhere. However, happiness comes at a cost. You have to spend money to be happy. Unfortunately, if you don’t have enough money then you are not going to be very happy, are you? Money has become synonymous with happiness. You believe that the wealthier you are, the happier you are. The more “stuff” you have, the better you will feel. How much is your happiness costing you?
You are constantly pursuing happiness through your never ending purchases. How much is happiness costing you? Once you get into the habit of buying happiness, it becomes a drug. Are you going into debt trying to be happy? Eventually, the “happy high” wears off because there is always something newer, bigger, and better to make you happier than you were before and you just can’t seem to keep up. Paydays don’t come by fast enough. There is a reason why shopping cures sadness for so many people. Our society has brainwashed us into believing that you can actually buy happiness. Understand that the message of happiness from our society is just a tool for businesses to sell products. It’s what makes them happy.
What about your relationships? How much is happiness costing you there? Are depending on your mate to make you happy? Have you made it their responsibility? When you say things like, “You make me happy” or “You don’t make me happy” means you are allowing another individual to determine your level of happiness. Eventually, this way of thinking and behaving will cost you your relationship.
Happiness is a decision. Happiness is your decision. Happiness is not a thing you can drink, eat, drive, wear, or marry. Happiness is a choice that comes from within. It is a choice you must make daily. A decision you must make every moment of your life. Remember, happiness cannot be bought. Rather, happiness is a choice that is just one decision away.
“The best feeling in the world is realizing that you’re perfectly happy without the thing you thought you needed.”
