What are YOUR requirements for a full and satisfying life?
REQUIREMENTS
Traveling is a requirement for me. I just returned from a trip to Portugal. One of the sites of interest that we visited was the Roman ruins at Estoi, a small town in the Algarve region in southern Portugal. The exhibit was beautifully organized with wall text in English as well as Portuguese. The text was discussing the requirements of a favorable setting for a Villa, or Quinta as it is referred to in Portuguese. Ample water supply, with southern light for rooms near the baths and northern exposure for sleeping and sitting areas to provide relief from the intense Algarve sun. Designing the structures so that the breezes from the sea would ventilate the space. Planning gardens for optimum practical and aesthetic function as well as balancing social and privacy requirements. Thoughtfully designed homes, cities, buildings, and parks contribute to the well-being and productivity of the human inhabitants.
What are your requirements? I am referring to both the internal and external
structures that are unique to you. What are the things that you MUST have in
order to function and contribute optimally to your environment? In the more
than twenty years that I have been working with clients, I have observed that one of the most common things that inevitably creates both internal and relationship conflicts is when people are either unclear or unwilling to acknowledge their requirements.
Here are some examples from my life: I need to travel regularly; I need to be
intellectually stimulated; I need exposure to the arts; I need time to myself to
think and dream; I need a peaceful home life; I need a supportive and passionate partner or lover.
What are your requirements? By the way, this isn’t a “selfish” exercise. The
more clarity you have in this area and the more able you are to express it directly, the happier your relationships will be.
How much alone vs. relationship or social time do you need?
What are your aesthetic requirements?
Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment or do you prefer a slower pace?
What is your money style? Spender? Saver?
Do you like lots of variety in food, activities, and vacations or do you like to have those things be more constant?
What are the things you “can’t live without”?
What are your top ten internal requirements?
What are your top ten external requirements?
These are just a few of the requirements you might think about. There is no
right or wrong in these preferences, they just reflect your true self. You might
consider exchanging your top ten with a friend or partner. Listen carefully, and
respectfully—you might be surprised!!
