Having trouble completing some of those projects and plans? Try these tips to stay motivated and moving along!
Remember those New Year’s resolutions we excitedly made – and were so sure we would keep! How is it going? It isn’t always as easy as one would think! Why do we do this? Why do we set goals for something that initially has our full attention and we are passionate about, only to lose that momentum, fizzle out and not finish?
It could be any number of reasons. Reaching that goal could be more difficult than we anticipated. Or maybe we have too many things on the go and not enough time to dedicate to reaching another goal. So what can we do to keep on track with our resolutions?
First look at the result you want to achieve. What is it? Why do you want it? Why is it important to you? What will achieving it do for you? What will you get out of it? If you can keep these answers uppermost in mind, it will help to keep you going.
How difficult will it be to achieve the goal? Is there any way to bring someone else on board to hold you accountable or to help motivate you? Will it be possible to obtain everything you need in order to reach your goal? Talk to a friend about their goals and see if there is a way to work together, such as swapping tasks that are not your strengths but may be someone else’s. Make a trade!
To keep yourself motivated try any (or all!) of the following tips:
Keep a visual reminder of the final outcome.
Delegate any parts you reasonably can. And return the favour!
Reward yourself with each minor accomplishment. You deserve it! The magic word here is reward.
Tell someone about your goal and have them hold you accountable for the steps you need to take until you’ve reached it.
When you slip up, give yourself permission to be human and therefore imperfect, and carry on, keep going.
Set smaller goals within the overall goal. Reaching each one gives a sense of accomplishment that is motivating in itself!
Keep in mind how others may benefit because you reached your goal.
Create a deadline with consequences. Now you have to get it done!
Take another look at those resolutions or goals you have. Will applying any of the above tips enable you to reach them? Something to consider….are they goals that you actually want to reach? That in itself is another reason we don’t always follow through with what we started….our heart wasn’t in it in the first place. And if that’s so, give yourself permission to let those go, freeing up your time and energy for those you do want to reach!
Good luck!
