Have you ever gone on a date and wondered “Why are you in front of me?” Now I’m not talking about those dates where you’re looking at them in disbelief because you feel like your life is wasting every moment you’re in their presence. No no, I’m referring to more of matters regarding purpose. Perhaps I over analyze life, but I’m always looking for the significance of why I am where I am, why I’m with whom I’m with and what should I be paying attention to?
Needless to say this follows me on my dates. Typically while I’m on a date I often think “What am I supposed to learn from this person?” I usually like to make sure that I’m going on dates with gentleman who either inspire me, are driven or work in a field that I find interesting. Well traveled, or a sweet spirited gentlemen I find fascinating. Point is I want to learn, I want to be inspired, it must be interesting.
Then there are those dates where I get the vibe that it’s not about what I can necessarily learn but what I can offer. Not to go into over responsible mode (which I have been known to do), but to see what deposits I can make in that person. Perhaps they’re in a rough spot and need some affirmation. Maybe they’ve thrown their identity to the wayside and need to be reminded of who they are (you gotta follow your gut on this one and make sure you’re in tune). Or maybe they just need the simple reminder that there are still good people out there who actually still care.
I’m convinced there is always purpose behind every opportunity, every date, every moment. We just have to be in a place where we are aware of ourselves and our surroundings. And sometimes it’s not always about us and what we can get out of the other person, but also what we can offer. When you understand your value, you understand that you carry greatness that can be shared, experienced and felt by others.
So the next time you’re out on a date ask “Why are you in front of me?”
