Clinical Review of the Actions Hero App- designed for living with ADD/ADHD
Re: Living with ADD/ADHD smartphone application
To whom it may concern,
I have enjoyed the privilege of reviewing Kimber Nelson’s smartphone application for living with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) management and coaching. As a licensed and certified psychotherapist with 10 years of experience, I have extensive experience in the clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of this brain-based disorder and can attest to the value and applicability of this application in the symptom management of ADHD. Following scientific guidelines promoted by Jackson and Farrugia (1997), Kimber’s ADHD smartphone application affords the following three advantages to users:
Attention Management Skills: Because inattention is a primary characteristic of living with ADD/ADHD, attention management skills should be addressed. Learning to control attention, through such techniques as focused attention, sustained attention, selective attention, alternating attention, and divided attention, will help individuals with ADHD monitor their own behavior and become more productive. Kimber’s application offers consumers an organized menu addressing life domains (e.g., career and finance) for enhanced attention management.
Self-Control: One of the primary goals of treatment for ADHD is to enable individuals to develop adequate levels of self-control. Individuals with ADHD should also be able to recognize their limits, such as when they unproductively go off track and they also need to reward themselves for a job well done. Together, the combination of self-awareness, self-monitoring, and self-reinforcement is most effective in improving on-task behaviors in those affected and living with ADD/ADHD. Kimber’s use of immediate task monitoring and customizable rewards, such as gaming spoils, draws upon operant behavior conditioning principles to promote self-awareness, self-monitoring, and self-reinforcement of ADHD symptoms.
Social Skills Training: Researchers have found that individuals living with ADD/ADHD may have serious difficulties in creating and sustaining healthy social and interpersonal relationships. Their problems with inattention, impulse control, all-or-nothing thinking, and disorganized thought patterns impair their ability to “socially perform”. Kimber’s domains of “My Development” and “Relationships” promote user social skills training for enhanced life functioning and healthy interpersonal relationships.
For these three reasons I fully endorse Kimber’s smartphone application without hesitation!
Respectfully,
Dr. Jason H. King
