How To Get It All Done

Feeling overwhelmed? Discover the secrets to getting everything done, even during the busiest of times.
Lately, I have gotten so busy that I find myself in dire need of scheduling absolutely everything. Between coaching, interviews, consulting and being the mom of an aspiring and talented young woman, I once again feel everything pulling on me at once.
I know I’m not the only one who wonders how everything can get done in time, but here’s how I handle it. I trick my mind. In order to get everything done I have to figure out the “how.” And that usually starts with focusing on what’s important, but that’s easier said than done. To determine where your focus should be, take a look at what’s going on in your life right now. I call that finding a main focus. What is truly and honestly the most important thing for you? In my case, right now it’s my daughter because she is leaving for college in a few months, so I want to spend every moment I can with her because this time will never come back.
What about you? What is your main focus? Is it work, health, your relationship, your children, family or money? Once you have your true priority straight, take a look at what that means for your daily routine. For me, that means not working when Gina is here.
What does it mean for you? Do you need to take care of your health? Then perhaps eating right and exercising is your main focus. If it’s making money, then you need to focus on those tasks that will generate income for you the fastest.
Just Do It
We all know the expression, just do it, but why is it so hard to stick to what we know is important and has to get done? Because, simply, but we just don’t want to! And, of course, we always have a reason. Mine is that I don’t need to be more disciplined or organized, because I am already German. Isn’t it enough, I reason, that these traits are already in my DNA? Here’s an amusing Wired story about productivity. http://goo.gl/IdkAU
Excuses, Excuses
Like me, do you suffer from Entrepreneurial ADD? It’s a term I invented to describe why entrepreneurs are so easily distracted, and rather not focus on one thing. Your excuse might be that you hate to make those cold calls and feel awkward so, therefore, you just don’t make them. Or you run so late for that industry-networking event you already RSVP’d to, that it now makes no sense to go. Although you know you should go, you still don’t.
A Simple Trick
Everything we do is in essence a choice. And that goes for how we choose to think about all the things we need to get done. More often than not, we use language like have to, need to or should and, frankly, that’s when the going gets tough. But if you make a conscious choice and recognize these things as a CHOICE, you will be in good shape.
So when you set your main focus, remember to look at this from a new perspective. Maybe you are privileged like I am to be able to do what you love, to live your passion and provide the world with your valuable service and great attitude!
