Confessions of a Shopaholic

Being unhappy in your career can be the root cause of things in your life that aren't going well.
I go to BJ’s wholesale club to get milk because it’s a $1 less than Stop & Shop. But I can’t seem to get out of there for less than $300.
I’ve gone into TJ Max to buy a pair of shorts (one pair), and came out with the shorts and 4 pairs of kickin’ shoes.
When I’m really down, I’ve been known to buy myself a car (on more than one occasion).
One might say I’m a shopaholic. What does this have to do with career advice? Stay with me….
I’ve recently noticed my lack of desire for shopping. Don’t get me wrong, I have shopped, but it’s no longer a burning urge. The urge for shopaholics comes from trying to find instant gratification when feeling down. Now that I’m content, I don’t hear TJ Max calling me.
Why am I content? My career. I’m so happy with my career change from the 9-5 corporate world sitting at a desk behind a computer after an hour’s commute to my own business as a career coach. I am now free to build my own schedule. My job is to help people, which is very rewarding. I don’t stress out or feel guilty when my kid has a school concert during the weekday and I can’t go. My weekends are packed with my kids’ activities, but I don’t care because I still get time to myself…it’s now just on Tuesday’s.
This job doesn’t pay as much as my job as a VP in financial services, but when you take away the shopping bill, it might come close.
Are you happy in your career? Do you think it’s even possible to be completely happy and still make your financial obligations?
