What on earth am I here for?

Exploring what your purpose is on earth.
After watching an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show (which aired Wednesday April 20, 2011). She interviewed a famous Hollywood director and producer name Tom Shadyac who recently filmed a new thought provoking documentary called “I AM”. Interestingly enough, this interview was aired during Holy week, also known as Passover. Tom references the Bible and admits that the film’s title is attributed to GOD Himself as “I AM”.
In a nutshell, according to Tom, the documentary is about following one’s heart and discovering what is the meaning of their existence. Once it’s discovered and embraced it should be pursued fervently. He also suggests that we be more responsible, unselfish and simplistic in our approach to living and our interaction with others. In other words, the reason we are placed on this earth is not only to pursue our own heart’s goals and dreams but in doing so we should seek to serve, love and cooperate with others in order to experience a more honorable and fulfilling life.
How do those two seemingly small words “I AM” evoke such enormous power and titillating conversations? Well, I am glad you asked. It starts with its originator, the ONE TRUE LIVING GOD. The Bible is filled with references where GOD declares His Sovereignty as “I AM”. The most familiar is when Moses is being commissioned by GOD to go to Pharaoh to declare the release of the children of Israel from Egypt. Moses said to GOD "Who am I that I should go unto Pharaoh and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” GOD then tells Moses “I will be with you,” reassuring him that he will be okay. Yet Moses still feeling afraid and uncertain he doubts GOD (does this ring a loud and familiar chord?) and in essence asks HIM “who shall I say sent me” and GOD says to Moses say “I AM THAT I AM sent you.”
Where or who is GOD, the I AM sending you to? What is your purpose, your calling? What on earth are you here for?
For me, I am convinced that I am in alignment with my purpose in becoming a professional Life Coach and the Oprah interview just further confirmed one of my purposes and many passions on earth which is to help as many people as GOD would allow possible, to discover the divinely designed life they were meant to live. It’s a journey but it is always worth the trip when GOD is the driver.
Many people have either found themselves stuck in a sometimes comfortable yet painstaking, unsatisfied and unfulfilling rut. Be it a dead end job, a despondent relationship or living a lackluster life for one of the following reasons:
“I hate my job but the pay is good.”
“At least I have a job and it pays the bills.”
“I’m too old to start over.”
“I’ve made some bad choices and I don’t know a way out.”
“I am close to retiring and I don’t want to lose my pension”
“I don’t know what else I would do.”
“I don’t know what my purpose is.”
“I don’t really have a passion,” etc.
The list goes on and on…Do any of these statements ring a bell? Well trust me you are not the only one. There are so many people who feel the same way you do. It’s quite understandable especially when society at large is the culprit for much of our unhealthy and distorted thinking about what we should be doing and how to relate to others. We are often told the only way to the American dream is to “work hard, get a good job, make a lot of money with benefits and a good pension, get married and have the illusive 2.5 children dog with white picket fence”, rather than being encouraged to discover what we are most passionate about and work hard to turn it into a career that is loved and can be shared with the ones you love. Or be inspired to pursue a career that we are extremely interested in that will be intrinsically and extrinsically rewarding.
Somehow we have been duped into believing, often by societal pressures, family members and those closest to us, that pursuing one’s passion is for dreamers. Another famous account in the book of Genesis of the Bible, Joseph was a dreamer and he went from the pit, to the prison right into the palace and positioned him to for second in command .
Grant it, there will be some great and some small sacrifices you will have to make in order to bring that dream into a reality, if it’s the right dream outfit for you. If it is indeed the right fit then it’s worth the try and the sacrifices that come with it. What it really boils down to, how much are you willing to sacrifice, to work with GOD on bringing it to pass?
Many may be wondering “I’m too old and it’s too late for me to start over and try something new” or I’m afraid and I don’t know where to start”. If that’s what you’re thinking (or maybe not) then perhaps you could use some encouragement. The willingness to being open to exploring new ideas and possibilities that suit you will be the catalyst for achieving small goals or big dreams. With a little help and support you can do it!
Thank you and I appreciate you for taking the time to read and be inspired toward your purpose.
