Keeping your living space organized is often a challenge for people with ADHD.
Here are some simple tips for staying organized.
ADHD Friendly Ways to Organize Your Space
Circle Back
Retrace your steps and:
Close the open drawer.
Shut the closet door.
Put dishes in the sink.
Pick up what is on the floor.
Empty wastepaper baskets.
Pick up loose papers and either toss them right away or put in a to-do file box.
Ten minute or ten item pick up:
Set a timer for ten minutes and straighten up as much as you can at the end of the day or set out to put away ten things that are out of place as fast as you can.
Subtract before you add
Recycle or discard things before you bring in new things
Example: If you are buying new towels, throw out the old towels first.
Fifteen Minute Rule
Set a timer for 15 minutes
Focus your attention on one area for 15 minutes
When the timer goes off you can decide you are done for the day or
Reset the timer for another 15 minutes.
Throw Away/ Give Away Box
Create a box for things you don’t want and add items to the box as you come across them. Things that you don’t want or don’t need take up valuable space. Having less stuff will make your life more manageable. If you haven’t worn something in a year you probably can part with it.
