How to Let Go of the Past While Honoring How You Feel

Find out how dragging around the past is holding you back.
When we drag around the past, it weighs us down and keeps us from moving forward fully present into the new; we view each new experience in light of what happened to us before – the hurt, pain, betrayal, frustration and loss. We see a new friend in light of how an old friend lied to us. We see a new love in light of how an old love broke our heart. We hold onto our anger and sadness, consciously or unconsciously, as ‘badges of honor’. We don’t fully experience our grief, pushing our feelings down into our physical, emotional or mental bodies or out into our aura so we can pretend that it’s not there.
The key is to feel as we feel without judgment with gratitude for our feelings; for no matter how brutal or horrible the experience was, there is always a silver lining somewhere – at the very least we can be grateful for all we had and enjoyed when, for example, someone we loves dies. Holding grudges hurt us more than other; we develop cancer or cause of bodies to deteriorate from repressed feelings, from not forgiving ourselves and others and not letting go. Life contains so much more joy when we stop blaming and choose to be grateful.
Can you remember an incident where you were really hurt or devastated? How did you feel then? How do you feel now? Did you grieve? Can you choose to let go of what is not serving you and move on? How would it feel to fully accept yourself and all you did, thought and said and forgive yourself and the others involved? How can you use the experience to be a more compassionate person?
