Helping Yourself

Sometimes it's much easier to help others than it is to help ourselves. Learn how to help yourself by getting in touch with your desires.
One morning a couple of months ago, I was doing my own thing, getting ready for work. My then four-year-old called from her bedroom next door, “I need help picking out my outfit.” I didn’t really want to stop what I was doing, but I replied, “Okay. I’ll help you.” I put down my mascara and started heading for her room. I was stopped by her response – “I’ll help myself.” Excellent, I thought. Now I could go back to what I was doing.
When you identify something you would like some help with, something you’ve done before but just want a little support with, where do you turn? I know my first impulse is to ask someone else when the first sign of doubt creeps in. We often fail to realize that we each have the ability to help ourselves in a tremendous way. You are the expert on your own life. You know what you want, whether it’s the clothes you want to wear, the type of person you want to be with, the job you want . . . what makes you feel good. Identifying what you want is a great place to start.
The next step is realizing that you have the power to help yourself. You have the power to choose what you like and make steps to integrate those things into your life. You have the power to trade up your thoughts. You have the power to stop running in circles and move forward. You have the power to imagine. You have the power to put the pieces together. You have the power to create new habits. You have the power to overcome fear and step into a life of courage. You have the power to pursue your passion. You have the power to create change in your life. You have the power to look down, see the clothes in your dresser drawer, and decide whether or not you like them. You get to chose if you keep them, give them away, burn them, or combine what you have to make a beautiful ensemble. Once you realize this, take the opportunity to declare your sufficiency to the world – “I will help myself.”
