Accountability Partners

Freedom in Accountability
I know. The word accountability can strike fear and resentment in the heart of the bravest of souls. Yet is it possible to consider the word and the concept in such a way as to bring a sense of freedom and, perhaps, even excitement about the process?
A group of my fellow supervised training students and I have formed a group to hold each other accountable for goals we’ve expressed during our training. It started out with two of us, a third joined in, and now we are five members and counting. Our process is to check in with the group every few days and give an accounting of our status and whether or not we’re struggling or sailing through our journey to reach our goals. I do not get a sense of competition between the members, only support, encouragement, and a sharing of ideas.
For someone like me, an impossibly stubborn girl who resists even the idea of being accountable to anyone or feeling like I “have” to or “should” be doing something, especially when I’m not in the mood, this set-up is working well. There are no hidden feelings of resentment that might occur if I were to have a friend or family member as my accountability partner; someone who I’d be concerned might hold judgment toward my progress or lack thereof.
One bonus for me is that my fellow students are coaches, so I know they will give me the support I need.
Coaches are great accountability partners as they have only your best interests at heart. Coaches believe in their client’s abilities and potential. We hear your concerns, help lift you when you stumble, and celebrate your victories! We also keep everything you tell us confidential so you can feel safe and secure about sharing with us. I must tell you, my own coach has acted as my accountability partner and we’ve dug deep and accomplished so many things together. Talk about personal growth!!
If you have some goals you want to achieve and would like help with the process, consider enlisting an accountability partner. I am convinced your likelihood of success will greatly increase and you might even find you enjoy the process!
Good luck with those goals! Please feel free to contact me if you’d like to discuss them or are thinking about enlisting an accountability partner!
