Achieving Goals: Is There Any Way? Hopefully So.

Setting goals and achieving success is more than just having the willpower to go for it. Find out what successful people do differently.
Remember the old phrase “Where there’s a will there’s a way”? No Way! A person can have loads of willpower, but lack high hope when it comes to waypower, causing them to give up on goals and reach a plateau. Even if a path is obvious to others, if you can’t see it, then it is not an available route for you. That is the essence of waypower, one of the three ingredients of sustaining hope while pursuing goals.
Waypower is the perception that you can find ways to reach your goals. You not only perceive routes, but you also envision possible methods for getting there. The five characteristics of High-Waypower individuals are:
- They ask for help and seek guidance from others who have accomplished similar goals or experiencing similar life circumstances.
- They break larger goals into smaller parts. People with strong waypower outline steps needed to accomplish goals so that it doesn’t seem overwhelming and they experience small successes along the way.
- They know when they lack the skills necessary to complete goals and they expend the effort to acquire expertise.
- High Way-Power individuals alter goals and remain flexible. They learn from their mistakes and regoal.
- They rehearse. Once high-waypower individuals have identified routes or pathways to achieve goals, they envision success and imagine what it will take to get there. And with a realistic lens, they look at the obstacles they may encounter and the benefits they will receive along the way.
Waypower is the muscle punch of goal-setting. It is the power bar, the protein shot, the 5-hour energy drink. Look at your life domains: family, work, finances, play, social relationships, intimacy, physical health, spirituality, learning/growth. Define your goals by recognizing the gaps between how you rate the importance of each domain and how satisfied you are in the present moment. There lies your greatest opportunity for a better tomorrow.
