Invest in Your Mind: How Mental Fitness Transforms Leadership Performance
How much time do you invest in your physical fitness — and what does it give you?
This time of year, many of us commit to improving our physical health. For me, it’s hours each week in the gym, on my bike, and in/on the water.
What does it give me? Happiness, energy, self-esteem, health, peace, and performance—All things I value and serve me well.
Now, let me ask: How much time do you invest in your mental fitness — and what could it give you?
For much of my professional career, I didn’t invest too much. My focus was on delivering results, relying on the knowledge and expertise I’d learned in business school and honed on the job. I rarely paused to reflect on how my thoughts, beliefs, and habits were helping or hindering my performance. I didn’t carve out time to expand my thinking, consider new perspectives, or develop behaviors that could have made me a more effective leader.
When I stepped away from corporate leadership to retrain as a business, leadership, and performance coach, I dedicated a year to developing new skills, methodologies, and mindsets.
The result? It was transformational — not just in enabling me to become an effective coach, but it reshaped the way I look at life, how I show up in relationships, approach challenges, and how I feel about myself.
I’ve let go of the need to always be right or have all the answers.
I’ve reduced stress, anxiety, and frustration.
I’ve gained more perspective, optimism, curiosity, and excitement.
Looking back, I often wonder how much more effective I could have been as a CEO if I’d prioritized mental fitness earlier.
Here’s my invitation: Consider how much time you’re investing in your mental performance and what could change for you if you made it a priority.
If you’re ready to work on your mental fitness as a leader, I’d love to help. Think of me as a personal fitness coach—but for your mind.
