The Power or Authenticity – A Client Success Story
Posted on January 09, 2025 by David Mahler, One of Thousands of Career Coaches on Noomii.
Confused to clear. This is a client story of how he went from not knowing what to do after being laid off to making a big impact in a new role.
Are you super productive when you are “in the zone”?
Do the extraneous thoughts that have nothing to do with the task at hand disappear?
Do you feel positive, energized, and engaged?
I am guessing the answer to all 3 questions is a resounding yes!
Don’t love your job? What would it be like to come home after a positive day at work?
What would it be like if most days at work were positive?
Very different, i’m guessing!
Well, a recent client reminded me of how awesome the power of authenticity is to generate and sustain success. I was in awe of the impact of being authentic in your thoughts, feeling, and actions our lives.
Here is the before and after.
BEFORE: A new client, we’ll call him Fred, came to me after a successful military career but has been “lost” in his search for a career that suited him. He had just been let go from a sales job he didn’t like due to an acquisition and a tough month of sales. He didn’t know what he wanted to do, applied for jobs that didn’t appeal or interest him, and was generally confused about what to do next.
PROCESS: We rewound the clock about what made him successful in the military (what he did, why he did it, and how he felt about it), identified his values and what were the most important values. What came out was he loved being in a leadership position, mentoring others, being part of a team, and taking focused action to succeed. He called this feeling “driven” and ranked it as his #1 value.
Bingo! A target! Now, we had a feeling and identify that was authentic to him. It felt good, he thought positive about the value, and it became the “measuring stick”. He now had a goal in mind that he could use to evaluate his actions, thoughts and feelings against.
RESULT: With this new perspective, Fred became motivated and energized. He viewed the career/job search as an opportunity to be driven. The positives were endless. He could be happy AND successful at work, be able to pay for his upcoming wedding, positively impact his peers at work, and show up happy and driven. Wow, what an amazing change!
“Driven” Fred targeted companies that aligned with his values and used the WWDFD (What Would Driven Fred Do) to guide his search.
Are you the least bit surprised that Fred identified, targeted, and landed a role quickly, AND, that role was a great fit for him?
Fred, from day one, is “crushing it”. He is surpassing sales goals (one week by 30% when the leadership was out), leading the development of a high margin new service offering, and creating loyal customers.
And what do you think has been the effect on the rest of his life. He shows up, is present and positive, help others and leads in his example to all that he comes in contact with.
As a coach, these are the moments where I feel tremendous joy and purpose. I’ll remember Fred and tell the story of where he was and where he is now to current and future clients. Fred is helping and will help people he doesn’t even know. What an impact!
Be well!
