How can you, as a leader, explore your own influence and develop strategies to become more impactful?
In today’s ever changing business landscape, the ability to influence others is crucial for effective leadership. A recent survey on leadership competency, conducting by Judith Germain, revealed that of the 86% of leaders who were found to be competent, only 14% scored as influential. This statistic suggests that many leaders are not fully leveraging their potential to create positive change. As a leader, it’s essential to recognise the power of influence and the impact it can have on driving success, fostering collaboration and inspiring teams to achieve greatness.
So how can you, as a leader, explore your own influence and develop strategies to become more impactful?
1. Reflecting on Your Leadership Style:
Take a moment for self-reflection. Consider your leadership style, strengths and areas for growth. Ask yourself:
- What are my key values and principles that guide my leadership?
- How do I currently use my influence to inspire and motivate others?
- Are there any blind spots or areas where I could enhance my leadership presence?
2. Building Authentic Relationships:
Influence is built on trust and authentic connections. To cultivate stronger relationships with your team and stakeholders, reflect on the following:
- How well do I know my team members and their aspirations?
- Am I actively listening and seeking input from others?
- What steps can I take to build trust and create an environment where people feel valued and heard?
3. Developing Effective Communication Skills:
Powerful communication lies at the heart of influence. Consider the following to enhance your communication effectiveness:
- How clear and compelling are my messages to others?
- Am I adapting my communication style to connect with diverse individuals and teams?
- How can I improve my active listening and ensure that my messages resonate with others?
4. Leading by Example:
Leaders who lead by example can inspire and motivate others to follow suit. Reflect on your own behavior and its impact on those around you:
- Am I embodying the values and behaviors I expect from my team?
- How can I demonstrate integrity, resilience and accountability in my actions?
- What steps can I take to create a positive and inclusive culture that others can emulate?
Influence is a powerful tool that, when used effectively, can drive positive change and inspire others to achieve greatness. By reflecting on your leadership style, building authentic relationships, honing communication skills and leading by example, you can become a more influential leader who leaves a lasting impact on your organisation and its people.
