Transform your life by challenging core beliefs that limit your potential. Discover freedom, agency, and a richer life through belief shifts
Learning what I’m about to share with you, changed the course of my entire life, career, and future. At first, questioning and challenging your beliefs can be a little bit deflating, and the ego will take a hit or two — but eventually, it will provide you with a level of freedom and agency that you’ve never experienced before. The reason? You will have a more immense amount of agency over your life, and your experience of life.
Is that not the quintessential human angst — whether we are in control of our fate or not?
Are We in Control?
Well, the bad news is, nothing is in our total control (no matter how arrogantly we think it is) — but the good news is, we have the control to influence everything in our lives favourably (aside from perhaps a late diagnosis of a fatal disease).
That itself is a (core) belief and one of the most powerful of all; Do you believe a person has a level of control over their destiny, or do you believe that everything happens to us and we are mere victims?
Some people go through their entire lives believing they are victims of their circumstances, while others hold the belief that anything is possible and within their reach — guess whose experience of life is better, richer, and more abundant?
In very plain and simple English — The types of beliefs we hold, determine the quality of our life experience. The bloody fantastic news? You can change any belief you have and greatly improve the quality of your life. All a belief really is, is a thought, and if you live in a democratic society — well you have the freedom to think whatever you want.
Do We Choose Our Beliefs?
Now, the challenge is that most of our beliefs are not actually chosen out of our free will, they are handed to us by our parents, society, and the people who we spend the most time with. I know that might sound like I’m saying you have no original beliefs, and you don’t like to believe that — no one does, I get it. However, what I’m saying is, that most of your beliefs you have rationalized to accept as your beliefs consciously, but they are not consciously chosen from a list of belief options.
Now that’s not to say every belief you hold is a belief your parents held, many people come to their own beliefs that are different to their parents in many areas of life, and many people have different beliefs than their friends. But let me ask you this — what influenced that change of belief?
Were you locked in a room thinking about your beliefs for 5 years? Was it something you saw, learned, or heard from others that influenced that change of belief? So even though we can develop our own beliefs, they are still based on a learned belief system.
One can say, “Oh this is terrible, I have no original thoughts of my own”, or you can look at this as a very powerful and promising prospect; if we get to choose our beliefs, we only need to choose environments and individuals whose beliefs we respect and envy — and naturally our beliefs and through a sort of osmosis, we will develop a similar belief system over time. We may not even need those environments and individuals but it sure makes it easier (the internet and social media make this possibility very easy nowadays if utilized correctly).
Core Beliefs
My focus in writing this is not directed at things like political beliefs, it is more focused on our core beliefs, the ones that shape our worldview and determine our experience of the world. This refers to beliefs about how the world works and beliefs about how life works.
Some examples:
Beliefs around money and the nature of money determine your relationship with money. Do you believe that money is evil, or that money is inherently wonderful, or that money is nothing but a means of exchange?
Our beliefs around the concept of ‘money’ will dictate how our money life unfolds.
Here’s another common belief about the way life works that I used to hold as well; “Life is all about struggle and challenges and things don’t come easy, and you have to battle your way through every single thing in this world”. And guess what? Everything in my life was a struggle, a challenge, and I battled my way through everything. Today? New belief > New experience of life.
Changing Beliefs
I’m not saying it’s an overnight process or that it’s easy, but it certainly is possible. I’ve worked hard to change many of my core beliefs, and I made a decision to challenge all beliefs that came up that didn’t serve me, that didn’t serve my ideal life, and that didn’t serve an abundant and joyful life. Now, this is not to profess that all of my life is wonderfully blissful and that life does not come with its challenges, hurdles, and pain — those things are part of life.
But my (NEW) beliefs around those challenges, hurdles and pain make them a lot easier to get through! The mere fact that one believes that a part of being human is to experience pain at different points of life — makes the pain bearable. It makes the pain worthwhile. And it certainly makes the pain dissolve quicker.
I’m a big believer in working on shifting our beliefs, and challenging beliefs that limit our potential and quality of life, simply because I have seen it work time and time again. The impact these beliefs have on our mindset and our reality is not to be underestimated. From wealth creation to finding one’s ideal partner, to experiencing radically less stress in our daily lives, the list of possibilities is endless.
And it all starts with changing a belief. How cool is that?
Of course, I will now conclude with a pitch — if you’re looking to shift some beliefs (or have someone point out your limiting beliefs) all for the purpose of unlocking a better, richer and more fulfilling life — you know where to find me.
