Embracing Multipotentiality: How to See Your Many Interests as Strengths
Posted on December 19, 2024 by Magali Toussaint, One of Thousands of Leadership Coaches on Noomii.
Embrace your many passions as a multipotentialite, turn them into strengths, and create a career that’s truly yours.
You know that feeling when someone asks, “So, what do you do?” and your brain goes into overdrive trying to find the “right” answer? It’s not that you don’t know—you just have so many different interests, and they’re all important to who you are.
I used to try to label myself in neat little boxes: consultant, Career Coach, Trainer, Entrepreneur, Mom, Language Learner, recruiter, leader, Traveler. But none of them really told the full story. I’d try to fit myself into one category, and it never felt right. If you’ve ever felt this way, here’s the truth: You’re not unfocused, indecisive, or “too much.” You’re a multipotentialite.
Being a multipotentialite is like holding a kaleidoscope—every turn reveals a new combination of your skills, passions, and experiences. In today’s world, that’s not a problem. It’s your secret weapon.
This article isn’t about narrowing yourself down or finding “the one thing” you’re supposed to do. It’s about embracing the beauty of having many passions and learning how to make them work for you.
- Why Being a Multipotentialite Rocks
The world has changed. The days of fitting into one tidy box and doing the same thing for 40 years are long gone. Today, we need people who can think outside the box and handle a range of challenges. And that’s where you come in.
Here’s why being a multipotentialite is your superpower:
1. You’re a Creative Problem-Solver
When you dive into different fields, you naturally start seeing connections that others don’t. You’re like a mashup of ideas, always ready to innovate.2. You’re Incredibly Adaptable
You’ve had to learn how to start fresh, pivot, and adapt to new situations. That makes you unshakeable in a world where things are always changing.3. You Have Unstoppable Curiosity
Multipotentialites are always eager to learn. That curiosity keeps you moving forward, exploring new ideas, and staying ahead of the curve.4. You See the Big Picture
You can step back and see how everything connects. You don’t just see the individual pieces—you connect the dots.- Let’s Flip the Script: Multipotentiality = Superpower
If you’ve ever felt like you’re just “dabbling” or that you aren’t “serious enough,” it’s time to flip the script. You’re not scattered; you’re layered. Here’s how to own it:
- 1. Stop Explaining Yourself
Let’s stop with the “Sorry, I do a lot of things” narrative. You don’t need to apologize for being multifaceted.
Try This Instead:
When someone asks, “What do you do?” try this response with confidence:
- “I explore a variety of interests and connect them in creative ways. It keeps life exciting and brings a unique perspective to my work.”
You don’t need to fit into a box to make others comfortable.
- 2. Find the Threads That Tie It All Together
Your passions don’t have to feel disconnected. There are probably common themes running through everything you love.
Ask Yourself:
- What do all my interests have in common?
- How do they align with my values or the impact I want to make?
- How can I combine them to create something truly meaningful?
This isn’t about picking one thing. It’s about seeing how all the pieces fit together in the bigger puzzle of your life.
- 3. Design a Portfolio Life
You’re not meant for a traditional 9-to-5 job where you do the same thing every day for decades. That’s not who you are.
What to Do:
- Start with one core focus, but make room for side projects, hobbies, or freelance gigs that keep your other passions alive.
- Think of your career as a portfolio—different pieces that come together to create the whole picture.
There’s no one-size-fits-all path to success. Create your own.
- 4. Reframe Your Career Story
When you have a non-linear career, others might see it as chaotic. Your job is to show them the brilliance behind the journey.
Here’s How:
Instead of saying, “I’ve done a little bit of everything,” reframe it like this:
- “My experiences in marketing, design, and public speaking have given me the ability to craft compelling stories that connect with diverse audiences.”
Focus on the skills you’ve gained—not just the variety of roles you’ve had.
- 5. Redefine Success for Yourself
Traditional ideas of success—climbing the corporate ladder, sticking to one field forever—don’t apply to everyone. For multipotentialites, success is about growth, creativity, and making an impact.
Ask Yourself:
- What does success look like to me?
- How can I use my skills to make a difference?
- What kind of life do I want to build, and how can my passions fuel it?
Success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone—and that’s a good thing.
- Owning Your Multipotentiality
The world needs people who can think creatively, connect the dots, and adapt quickly. That’s you. So stop trying to fit into a single category and start embracing the magic of who you are.
