Choosing the right therapist or coach can be a deeply personal journey, and there are several factors to consider to ensure the best fit for your goals and personality. Here’s a guide to making the best choice based on different aspects of their style and approach.

1. Comfort Level and Openness
First and foremost, pay attention to how you feel in their presence during the initial consultation. Can you envision yourself openly sharing personal details? Ideally, you should feel at ease talking to them, as comfort is key to making meaningful progress. If you sense hesitation, it could indicate that the professional’s style, and moreover, their energy, may not fully align with your needs. Think about this individual as someone you meet in the grocery store – sometimes there’s people you jive with and others feel awkward, disjointed, or uncertain. Your relationship with your next provider is meant to feel filled with acceptance, openness, and honesty. Go into the initial consultation taking inventory of your ability to be open. How you FEEL during and after the consultation should be your #1 deciding factor.
2. Educational Background and Credentials/Credibility
Consider the therapist’s or coach’s educational background to see if it aligns with what you’re looking for. For example:
Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): often skilled in relational dynamics. They will look at an individual or a couple from a systemic lens. Who is the whole-person? What parts of their past/present identities impact their current experiences?
Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs): may focus more on individual therapeutic strategies. They will address the present symptoms through theory, action steps, and solutions.
Mental Health Counseling (LMHCs): looks at present day, specific challenges and offers more short term care.
Social Workers (LCSWs): bring a holistic perspective by looking at the client through a macro, advocacy viewpoint and a social justice lens.
Psychologists (PsyD [Psychology] or PhD [Philosophy]): “PsyD programs will usually prepare students for clinical therapy, testing, and working directly with patients, while PhD programs generally prepare students for clinical practice, academia, and scientific research.” (Bezzy Depression)
Psychiatrists: focus on prescribing medication and getting you on a plan that best suits your mental health challenges.
Coaches: often prioritize future-focused strategies to get you into the energy of the direction you are hoping to-go and clearing the debris of the past along the way. Note: many coaches have a therapy background. Check the coaching specializations they have and what their educational background is.
