In our professional journeys, we evolve from individual contributors to leaders. Transitioning to a leadership role involves a significant shift
In our professional careers we start as beginners and for few years remain in role of learning, understanding practical working environment and performing job responsibilities as assigned. In initial phase we primarily manage ourselves only. On basis of our performances, competencies and organization requirements we start moving up the ladder and time comes when we are assigned leadership role. This is where the big change happens for us on account of transition
from self-management to multi-team management
Single task to multitask management
Manage direct teams and collaborate with cross functions
Self-motivation to team motivation
Self-assessment /Self review to team review and assessment
Self-monitoring and controlling to team monitoring and controlling
Self-deliverables -accountability to team and Multitask deliverables accountability.
Self-discipline to team discipline
Nurture and demonstrate effective collaboration and coordination for efficient team work.
Being accountable for smooth functioning and implementation of desired systems ,procedures and new initiatives
Manage work in conflict situations.
Be decisive
Better understanding of market dynamics and business development processes etc.
Managing balance among management, Cross function team and direct team expectation.
Managing professional and personal life balance
There are many others which can be added. This is the phase which can make us or break us in our professional journey. It is seen that
1. There are many who performed excellent as an individual could not do same in leadership roles.
2. There are many who accepted and embraces the change well, hold the nerves and succeeded in leader ship role journey very well.
3. Most of the people remained in 50:50 situation and they
Somehow managed however get stuck up in mid path of their leader ship role journey.
Leadership role became compulsion/ burden for them
Now for third point reasons could be
1. Operational issues
2. Competency issues
3. Leadership style issues
4. Self-doubt in new role & conflict situations
5. Self-limiting beliefs
6. Conflict with team and cross functions
7. Time management
8. Overwhelmed by situation and new role
9. Ambiguity and un-clarity about reasons for underperformance
10. Many others
In third situation one has to two choices
Choice 1 : Live the life as it is going
Choice 2 : Do not live compromised life and seek support from someone who can be your Coach and Mentor and can support you
This person could be a person
1. Who has walked the path on which you are currently trying to walk
2. Who has not only walked the path but also have acquired special coaching and mentoring skills and
1. Has non-judgmental approach
2. Has no Presumptions
3. Has no self-hidden agenda
4. Has active and deep listening skill
5. Has powerful Questioning skill to evoke self-awareness
