Don't You Just Hate A know it all!!

I am not an expert. Really. But I know a whole lot about LIFE!!
I have a confession to make.
You have to believe me – please. We are totally over-run by experts. There are so many experts in so many fields, that I wonder however do these “experts” manage to get through the day without the badge. The one that reminds them, they’re an “expert.”I am always bothered by the term expert. It’s almost as if one takes away the core and essence of who you are. The spirit self, the human self. One becomes elevated, activated or somehow in this class by yourself……The Expert Class!
Gaining knowledge and sharing knowledge, and being good at – being very good at – that something is very important. In fact, it’s absolutely vital in some cases. If I were to be in the need of a brain surgery, you bet I’d want someone who’s well qualified. I might even say, someone who’s an “expert.”
I hope I never need one, but the “expert” that comes to mind for the brain surgery that I will never need is Dr. Keith Black. He is the kind of expert that I admire, because he’s not so full of his “expertness” that he forgets his humanity. This absolutely, well qualified, knowledgable, well respected brain surgeon is humble.
His humility gives me confidence. Gives me hope that despite his knowledge and expertise, he’s not so fluffed up with self-importance that he forgets that we’re all the same. Human beings. The parts that make up our external beings – the skin, bones, muscles, blood, etc……all our body parts are the same.
It is our humanity that connects us.
And so, as I get the honor and privilege of working with clients, I remind them of my frailties, my short-comings, my foibles, my human-ness. I walk them through processes, being careful to adhere to the high standards of this wonderful profession. I self-regulate. I perform my expected duties as a coach, with integrity.
I have knowledge that’s been learned from institutions, books, seminars, people, life experiences. I know a lot. There’s a whole lot I don’t know. I’m ok with that. It allows me to choose what I want to know, and not waste time on the other stuff.
I am an effective coach. I am a successful coach. I am a respected coach.
I am a human being interacting with other human beings to transform their lives.
