Three Reasons Why You Need to Start Writing the Morning Pages

Morning Pages are basically three full A4 pages you write on a notepad with a pen as soon as you wake up.
The Morning Pages is one of the two basic tools suggested by Julia Cameron in all of her books, and especially in The Artist’s Way. In the Artist’s Way Workbook, Cameron states that has been continuing the Morning Pages practice herself for the past thirty-five years. Talk about really walking the talk!
I first found out about the Morning Pages on a random LinkedIn post. The post started with Martin Scorzese (Cameron’s ex-husband). The post then went into explaining that it was actually Cameron who was the real creative force behind Scorzese and many other creatives. And it was in that post that I first read about the Morning Pages.
Morning Pages are basically three full A4 pages you write on a notepad with a pen as soon as you wake up. As you have noticed, there are three basic rules to writing the Morning Pages:
- You need to do it as soon as you wake up, before checking your phone etc. - It needs to be three full A4 pages - You need to write it by hand, typing does not countAnother rule that is important to implement is the following. After having written three pages, do not look back at what you’ve written or share it with others.
But why should you make time to write three pages by hand every morning as soon as you wake up?
I have been practicing the Morning Pages for almost six months now and it has helped me with the following:
- Writing what I want from the day in front of me fills me with an immense amount of energy to start my day - If there is any unnecessary or unhelpful thoughts remaining from the previous day/evening, I can leave such thoughts on the paper and pick fresh thoughts for the day I am about to live - It’s a good opportunity for me to practice my positive affirmations and manifest what I want in lifeIf you are interested in finding out more about the Morning Pages, please check out the book: The Artist’s Way.
“A fascinating and fun twelve-week long programme of exercises and explorations to help you loosen up your artistic self… Three times in the last decade I’ve committed to doing The Artist’s Way and each time I’ve learned something important and surprising about myself and my work… Without The Artist’s Way, there would have been no Eat, Pray, Love.” – Elizabeth Gilbert
