How can you use coaching to develop your confidence?
“I am really lacking confidence!"
This is a common theme that arises during coaching conversations.
The great news is that we are opening the door to help develop our self-confidence instead of locking it away.
One of the great assets we have is the capacity to get confident and maintain it.
However, we do not pull confidence out of the air and create it out of nothing!
Self- Confidence is a general feature of personality, it’s a belief that you can be successful.
I often use the 4cs model to help develop confidence in individuals or teams. This is deeply rooted in sound theory, science and application.
The 4cs model is made up of 4 key constructs – Control, Commitment, Challenge and Confidence supported by 8 independent factors.
Within this model we break confidence into two factors:
· In Abilities – I believe I have the ability to do it, or can acquire the ability
· Interpersonal Confidence – I can influence others, I can stand my ground if needed.
Someone can self-diagnose themselves as not being confident, but the opportunity to develop their confidence can hide somewhere else.
An example would be let’s say, under the construct of commitment, they are easily distracted and possibly give up too quickly on their goals. When things get difficult, the sweat deprived towel gets thrown in. This can erode their self-belief on taking on new tasks or finishing things.
To develop confidence in this case, the focus may lie on goal setting, self-talk and visualisation exercises.
Another instance someone can be very confident in their abilities but lack the interpersonal confidence to speak publicly. When a difference of opinion is shared, they might feel threatened. All eyes on you can ignite the threat response.
Focus here could be on anxiety control, positive thinking, assertiveness, and scenario planning.
My coaching focus is to help people understand how they think.
How we think” helps to explain “why we act or behave” the way we do.
This helps us develop the areas that can hold you back!
