Fear can make changing careers daunting, but it doesn’t have to stop you. Learn to turn fear into courage with these five questions.
It can be scary to change careers.
But fear doesn’t have to stop you from getting a job you love.
Why is no one talking about the courage to get a job you love?
We can learn how to turn fear into courage.
Here are the 5 questions I use to do so:
1. What’s the worst thing that could happen?
– You might not get the job you want, or you might feel unsure in the new job.
2. How would you feel if that happened? Devastated, disappointed, frustrated, angry, sad?
Notice that often, it’s this feeling we don’t want to feel, and that’s what’s holding us back.
– You might feel sad or disappointed, but these feelings are temporary and, like my clients, you can learn how to manage them.
3. Imagine the worst thing happens. What could you do to face it?
Having a strategy in place can give us peace and relief.
– If you don’t get the job, you can try again or look for other opportunities.
– If you feel unsure in the new job, you can ask for help or learn new skills.
4. Our brain loves to show the worst-case scenario.
But why only think of the bad? What’s the best thing that could happen?
– You could get the job you love, feel happier, and grow in your career.
5. Chances are, neither extreme will come true. It will be a mix of good and bad.
So, what’s one realistic version of what could happen?
– You might face some challenges at first, but you’ll learn and grow. In the end, you’ll feel proud of yourself for trying.
