Rock the Boat

The boat is yours, you can either stay afloat, barely moving unless a wave happens to come by and push you, or you can rock the boat and row yourself.
I used to have this amazing boss; she was my very first boss. This is back in the 90s when your boss was allowed to push on your efforts, expect more, not be afraid to give you harsh words of wisdom, it was very much needed, hell, still is, if you believe in being pushed to do better. So, she used to have these rules about business, careers and how to get ahead. She is part of the reason I am here today, writing this blog. One of her biggest and bad ass rules was when you’re an employee, a career driven individual or an entrepreneur, you must rock the boat.
What do you mean, rock the boat? Like cause trouble? Not listen, not behave, how does one rock the boat in the business world? Very easily, you follow your gut, you question certain processes, you try to create a better work-around, you rock the boat. Unless you plan on working on the farm as the sheep, they want you to be, stand out, and stand up. But wait, before you rock anything, you need to be sure you are coming from a place of growth, not resentment. What does that mean? Well, sometimes people have these “expectations” from their place of employment, expectations that may not fit the mold of the company or clientele.
Before I forget, when it comes to business, it is not the responsibility of your bosses, your co-workers, or your company to recognize the work that you do without you making sure you do the same. If you are expecting a raise or promotion and you are not getting one, is it your boss who needs to recognize you and promote you or is it your responsibility to propel your career forward (prove yourself to be exceptional)? If you’re waiting to be recognized, you’ve lost already. It is your responsibility to rock that boat, to push forward, to excel, to grow. It is not the responsibility of your bosses, firm and or organization to highlight your skills, nah. Let’s be real, you’re not enslaved, you can leave if you want, right? Well then, you can also push forward if you want. The key is to know when to rock the boat, leave and move on.
The boat is yours, you can either stay afloat, barely moving unless a wave happens to come by and push you, or you can rock the boat and row yourself towards land.
