Cheers to “wandering minds!”
Hi! When I wrote “Be You” last week, a thought became words and words became a note. And as I read it back, I was happy, I loved it and my close friends and people who’ve worked closely with me resonated. I was super excited, I’d been telling myself that a creative journey is something I should embark on and finally, I had begun. The practical me said I’ll write once a week, daily is not possible, I’ll have a whole week to decide and refine… and then on Friday I wondered, Sat I was still not sure and it wasn’t until Sun morning in Church the idea struck- no God hadn’t enlightened me…it is in church while my devout husband and other parishioner’s pray, me and my mind feel free to wander.
For those who’ve watched movies and thought, “of course, oh the peaceful environment of the Church”. Or heard the beautiful Northeast choirs and said, “yes that melodious voice – that’s what brings out creativity.” Let me tell you, reality is far from it – someone in the choir is usually off note and the sermons can be boring – to me at least, my mother usually likes them. And I’m bored despite the fact that mass in Mumbai gets over in literally 30 mins.
Ok so back to my mind, it asked me why I wasn’t able to decide the entire week. Well for one I was procrastinating – initially I had enough time and then, I didn’t have enough time. I reflected whether this was indeed true. You obviously know the answer! There were many opportunities for me to allow my mind to wander and be creative but it’s these gadgets, it’s them they are my enemies. You see, at church you can’t look at your phone without having your mother or some old aunties give you the stare of disapproval. All I had needed through the week was to put my phone away when I walked my daily 10000 steps! It wasn’t as if the count multiplied each time, I looked through the health app!! I also had time when I sat with my dogs and stared out of the window into nothing. In fact, as if the universe tried to give me a sign, I remembered having watched a Ted talk during the week by Manoush Zomorodi’s on why “being bored can be a really good thing”, watch the full video on Ted Talks.
So next time you tell yourself – where is the time to think, when do you do something creative, when do you develop yourself and especially if you feel you have a dog’s life at work remember to just gaze outside your window. Keep the gadget away just for a few minutes each day, meditate, do something you like, or just do nothing. It’s important to “be kind to your mind” and let its power take you to a fantastic new high!
