5 Ways to Beat Stress and ADHD in the Workplace
It is often very challenging for people to manage their stress and deal with their ADHD in the workplace. When most people think about stress, they consider their own level of anxiety, pressure, and even panic. ADHD and work are two things that most people dread thinking about. There are many stressful things at work – deadlines, project goals, expectations, and the general workload.
One of the best solutions to prevent work-related stress is to research the best jobs for people with ADHD. This can prevent a lot of the issues you may have to deal with in the first place. However, many of us don’t have the ability to choose our place of employment, so this article will provide advice on the how to work with ADHD.
Below are five ways to take power back and disengage from work-related stress. Stress and happiness are a daily choice. We have the power to decide if something makes us happy or if someone can or should stress us out. You are powerful, you got this! While it isn’t an easy path, I am happy to help take you on it and suggest some really easy steps on how to downsize your work stress!
It ALL begins with your workspace…
Take a moment right now and look at your desk, your workspace, and your working environment. I am sure your desk and workspace are filled with tasks, started projects, coffee mugs, maybe even some snacks. What if we were to change things around a bit and season up your workspace?
A person’s workspace is their creative soil. It is often hard to stay on track or focused if a difficult customer or deadline is looming over you. However, it is during those times when it is more important than ever to stop, breathe and practice positive thinking.
Remember how awesome you are at what you do and how much you’ve achieved. This will be the first step in giving you the confidence to focus on your goals, and know you can achieve them.
Here are five tips on how to create an environment of positive affirmations and easy tips to help with ADHD at the workplace:
1. Positive Feedback – Gather emails or notes you’ve received from your coworkers, clients or supervisors that speak to your achievements or just a job well done. Print out your favorites and post them around your desk where they will catch your eye. Affirmations are powerful, especially from our peers and leaders. Look at them often when you doubt yourself to remember that you are a valuable member of the team.
2. Motivate Yourself – It’s often hard for adults with ADHD to motivate themselves. Checking off completed tasks off a to-do list can be a great way to stay on task. Make yourself a daily list that you know you can get done during the work day and check them off as you complete them. This will help you create a routine and see how much you get done every day.
3. Beautify your Surroundings – Get a plant or flowers to place on or near your desk. No matter what kind of day you’re going to have, caring for a living object will give you purpose, and provide you with a pleasant view every day.
4. Personalize Your Space – Remember that you are not your work, your work is part of you. Add pictures of loved ones to your work area. Being able to glance at your kids or pets can help you remember the reason that you came to work in the first place – to create a better life for you and your loved ones.
5. Stay Positive – It can be hard to manage stress and ADHD at work. Have some positive quotes on post-its or notes by your computer and phone to remind yourself of your power. You are a superhero! You have the power and control to make a daily choice of how you will respond to complicated, stressful, and/or difficult situations. Most importantly, remember that your space, your reactions, and your productivity are all progress, not perfection!
