Achievement begins with a detailed vision for the future. To manifest that vision you must first cast that vision which requires wise planning. A purposeful plan is like a guiding light in tough times. It keeps us focused on priorities and goals that are aligned with our values and purpose. Do you know what your values are? Do you know what your purpose is? The bible says the word is a lamp to our feet, and a light for our paths.
Thomas Edison spoke of the value in planning when he said, “Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishments, and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.”
People often know exactly what they want to achieve. However, they have no idea what the first step should be. If you ask someone what their goals are, they can usually tell you want they want to do. But if you ask them how it is coming along most people say “oh it’s coming I just need to focus more” or something to that effect. Describing their goals out loud, they might realize that they need more information or skills. But without a vision you will not be aware of potential hazards hiding in uninformed decisions.
“Where there is no vision, the people will perish.” We must be able to envision the future – our existence depends on it. But so often we get caught up in the past. Few of us can see beyond the present. However, in
order to create the future, we must have the ability to see the future.
Often, when we are asked to articulate our vision, we go to a very intellectual place to find it. Vision does not live in our place of intellect only. It often resides in our creative corners. To find your creative corner you must do a vision cast. You might discover interests and capabilities that you never realized you had.
As a coach, we help to shine a light down the path ahead, to form a clearer view of the destination and also the potential obstacles and detours. We assist in staying focused on the overall vision as well as on those sometimes agonizing small details.
Soon the person begins to form an initial plan. The first few steps become clear, and the individual can begin to move forward purposefully. The satisfaction of the first small accomplishment can lead to the enthusiasm needed to continue the journey ahead.
There is an unmistakable shift, a gleam of excitement in the eye of someone who discovers that their dream is possible. That discovery often begins when they create an initial plan. A plan gives a sense of reality to a dream.
Begin today. Create a compelling vision cast of what your life will look like five years from now. Then ask yourself, “What is my plan for making that vision a reality? For a 5 step unique process that follows a biblical path and involves biblical activities call today!
