Defining Me - To Be Yourself, You have to Know Yourself

A key turning point in my life was the day I looked at the picture of my life I had in my mind and realized the person in the picture wasn't me.
“Be Yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”
- Oscar Wilde
One of the key turning points in my life was the day I looked at the picture of my life I had in my mind in an effort to figure out why I kept picking the wrong person as my partner. I wanted to understand what I was missing, what it was that kept me from picking a partner who was on the same path as I was, who understood me, who fit into my life like the last little piece of the puzzle.
As I looked at that mental image, I had a startling realization. The ”me” in the picture of my life I saw in my mind’s eye was not the real me. It was an out-dated version of someone I might have been that was based on other people’s ideas of who I was going to be someday. In this context, it is easy to see why I kept picking the wrong person, I was picking people who were a good match for the girl in the picture which only works when the girl in the picture is you.
Over the next week, re-visit the image of yourself and your life that you keep in your head and make sure that picture aligns with who you are now and what you want out of your life. Make the mental image of who you are match the actual person you are now and want to become and then free yourself to be who you want to be.
